The Twelfth ManMeet North Carolina's Dewey "Biscuits" BurkePosted: Friday February 23, 2007 4:03PM; Updated: Friday February 23, 2007 4:03PM North Carolina fans know its coming.
When about two minutes remain in the game and the Tar Heels have claimed a comfortable lead, the chants of "Bis-cuits!" and "De-wey Bur-ke!" echo throughout the Dean Smith Center. In the stands, ticket holders are hoping that maybe, just maybe, tonight Dewey Burke will put the Tar Heels in three-digits in scoring with his clutch three-point shooting. On the bench, Burke's teammates and coaches tell him that he's got to put Carolina over the edge. But at nearby Bojangles fast-food restaurants, managers probably cringe at the thought of so many fans looking to cash in on their Tar Heel discount. Burke, a senior guard from Philadelphia, earned his nickname "Biscuits" after UNC's blowout victory against Penn on Jan. 3 -- two 3-pointers in two minutes to put Carolina over the century-mark. Then, against Miami on Jan. 31, Burke did it again. For the team, the 3-point goals simply extended its already blowout leads. But for the ticket-holders in the Smith Center those nights, it meant two steamy sausage biscuits for only a buck the next morning -- a whopping 79-cent savings. A UNC win and Bojangles in the morning -- who wouldn't be thrilled about that? But before Burke was "Biscuits," before he was ever a Tar Heel and before he even visited the North Carolina campus, he was a football player at Fairfield University. For about a week, that is. 1 of 2 | ||||
