RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) -- Troubled Brazilian club Corinthians named Paulo Cesar Carpegiani as their latest coach on Sunday.

The club said on their official Web site that Carpegiani, who led Paraguay to the last 16 at the 1998 World Cup, had signed a one-year contract.

The 58-year-old replaced former Brazil coach Emerson Leao, who was fired two weeks ago after a poor performance in the Paulista championship which kicks off the Brazilian season.

Carpegiani is the eighth coach at the popular but volatile club since they signed a partnership deal with London-based Media Sports Investments (MSI) at the end of 2004.

MSI initially spent lavishly on new signings and Corinthians won the Brazilian championship in 2005.

However, last year the club narrowly avoided relegation as MSI significantly reduced their investments.
