Party timeThe famous, notorious and strange turn out in MiamiPosted: Saturday February 3, 2007 2:41PM; Updated: Saturday February 3, 2007 6:46PM
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. -- Kanye West is chilling with Cindy Margolis under the palm trees at Nikki Beach. While guests around them kick up sand and down mojitos during an afternoon barbecue the tandem is hosting, a disagreement arises when the topic of conversation turns to the game on Sunday. "You got to go with Chicago," says West. "No way, I'm going with the Colts," says Margolis. After discussing the game for a few more minutes with no resolution in sight, Margolis finds salvation in my right arm, hooking on to me as we take a stroll around the rest of Nikki Beach, the popular Miami nightclub located on the soft sands of South Beach. "I think I ruined what we had going on by telling him who I was picking," kids Margolis. "He said he was a big fan of mine. I'm not sure if I believe him, but I'd much rather be talking with you." Now, I certainly don't believe Margolis, the most downloaded model on the Internet, as we stroll the beach, but I'll take the compliment as she tells me about her week in Miami. "Well, I didn't come with my husband and on Tuesday I had dinner with John Elway and Jon Bon Jovi and some other people involved with the Arena Football League and it was amazing because I'm the biggest Bon Jovi fan," she says. "You know how all couples have their 'lists' of people they would go with? Well, Bon Jovi is the only person on mine." While Margolis was talking up Bon Jovi, Elway was apparently giving advice to Thomas Jones and a few other members of the Chicago Bears as they wrapped up dinner. "They wanted to know if John had any advice for them and he said, 'Yeah, go back to your hotel rooms and don't come out,'" she says. "He said this place is like Las Vegas with all the distractions." It's something Margolis thinks might work to her advantage as she pulls for Peyton Manning and the Colts on Sunday. "I think I'm going to find a way to get Brian Urlacher and the rest of the Bears to come out with me on Saturday night," she says. "When I'm done with them they'll be too tired to play on Sunday." As Kanye West leaned against a palm tree, with unopened bottles of Hennesy and Grey Goose waiting for him in his cabana, Barry Sanders stopped by to chat with the rapper. There would be no disagreements about the game this time as Sanders still wasn't sure who would win. "I'm going 31-24," Sanders said. "I don't know who's going to win, but that's my pick for the score." After handing off a red Nerf football to Sanders on the beach, I asked the former Lions great if he ever wished he could have another handoff in an NFL game. "No, I never wanted to come back," he said with a smile on his face. "I thought about my decision for awhile and I never had any regrets." Sanders' earlier retirement was brought up again recently when Tiki Barber announced his retirement while still in the prime of his career. "It's a tough life filled with a lot of tough decision and I can understand what he's going through," Sanders said. "But Tiki's got a lot of other avenues outside of football. He'll be fine." Before heading to the Super Bowl Beach Bowl BBQ that West and Margolis where hosting, I stopped by the PlayStation Oasis at The Raleigh Hotel where the fine folks at Sony were giving VIP treatment to all the VIPs who had made their way down to Miami this week. The invite-only Oasis included private cabanas along a 300-foot private beach and the rooftop of the hotel, where sprawling views of South Beach were the backdrop for the limited edition PS3s and Nikes that were being custom-designed for only the most elite guests. Each PS3 and white-on-white Air Force One were placed in the Green Machine, the size of a copy machine, which etched on designs ranging from snakes and dragons to flames and flowers for A-listers only. "Shannon Stewart wanted one and we had to turn him down because we only have so many and they are in such demand," said one exec. "I felt bad because we gave one to Justin Morneau and he knows that, but Justin's such a big fan. He left his MVP press conference early to play with the PS3 we had just sent him." While Stewart had to settle for simply playing on the PS3s set up around the oversized Sony suite on the hotel's eighth floor, Tom Brady, Ludacris, Matt Leinart, Roy Williams and Garbrielle Union swung by the suite to pick up their new toys. While the stars were getting hooked up, Joey Fatone and Jamal Anderson were holding court in one of the cabanas by the pool as Jason Taylor, sweating through a gray suit on humid day in Miami, stopped by to see what was going on.
