MLB Power Rankings
Rank LW Team
11 The A's didn't exactly do the AL proud with that egg against the Mets, did they? Three runs in three games? And giving up 20? Maybe that Milton Bradley thing threw them off. I mean, they thought they had a trade for the guy. Another question: How does a team that so values OBP rank just seventh in the AL (.334)?
13 The Phillies have been a one step up, one step back kind of team lately. Except for Jon Lieber, that is, who won't be stepping anywhere for the rest of '07 after ripping up his foot. Still, Brett Myers and Tom Gordon are due back soon enough. The Phils are just three games behind. One step at a time.
10 So far, Roger Clemens hasn't been exactly the pinstriped panacea the Yanks were after. New York is 1-2 when the Rocket starts and, after a relief appearance on Sunday (a team guy!), 1-3 when he's appeared in a game. The team is 8-6 since Clemens threw his first pitch. That won't catch the Sox.
15 A bruised lung. Coughing up blood. Man, I'm just typing those words and I can't catch my breath. Let's get this straight: Without Justin Morneau in the lineup, the Twins don't have much chance at all. After Morneau's collision at home plate Friday, though, the prognosis is good. Twins fans can exhale.
16 The young Rockies rolled into the weekend with the best record in baseball since May 22 (20-8). And then they ran into the mighty ... Blue Jays? Yes, Toronto humbled the Rockies in a sweep, one-hitting Colorado in the finale on Sunday. Let's just chalk this up to growing pains. It's easier that way.
17 Dustin McGowan's one-hit beauty on Sunday -- wasn't he Screech on TV? -- pushed the Jays back to .500, quite an accomplishment for a team with a disabled list longer than Frank Thomas' arm. The Big Hurt, by the way, moved to within a home run of 500 on his career. He won't stop there.
12 Who would've figured the hitting would go first? Who would've figured four shutouts, and one lousy run, in the last five games? Andruw Jones' average is now below the Mendoza line. There's sniping in the clubhouse. After a 24-12 start, the Braves are at .500. If I were Bobby Cox, I'd beg to get thrown out of these games.
19 They traded troublesome catcher Michael Barrett. Both Jacque Jones and Cesar Izturis are on the block. This team struggles every single day. But the Cubs just swept the ChiSox, Carlos Zambrano is all fired up again and they get a chance next weekend to chip away at the Brewers. They're alive.
18 If the Marlins could catch the ball at all, they might even be in first place in the simple NL East. But 66 errors and a .976 fielding percentage (worst in the bigs) have chipped away at this team's accomplishments. The weak division is giving them a chance. They just have to learn to hold onto it.
20 The whole Elijah Dukes affair has been swept to the side for the time being, allowing the Devil Rays to concentrate on the business at hand which, if you've forgotten, is trying to get better. Through it all, the Rays have gone 11-11 this month. And that, baseball fans, is getting better.
