Making a listWhat might Santa be bringing the ladies of the WTA?Posted: Tuesday December 18, 2007 10:56AM; Updated: Tuesday December 18, 2007 11:06AM
Walk into any mall in America right now and you're bombarded with the holiday spirit. But the most recognizable sign of all is, of course, Santa Claus and the children who each year come and sit on his lap, reeling off what they want from St. Nick. Will it be the newest American Girl doll? Maybe the latest Nintendo Wii game? That made me think, as Santa checks his list twice, what does he have in store for the women of the WTA Tour? These are only my guesses, but with any luck, Santa's elves are feverishly working away... Maria Sharapova: an injury-free year, and continued reign as the most recognizable female athlete in the world. Lindsay Davenport: a three-year sponsorship deal with Huggies. Justine Henin: an extra-large duffel bag to transport the $5 million-plus she earned in prize money this past year. Serena Williams: the lead in the newest sitcom on the WB, as well as a successful Aussie Open title defense. Jelena Jankovic: not having to play Henin until the finals of any tournament. Marion Bartoli: a Prince racket bag that her "extra-long" rackets actually fit into. Elena Dementieva: a Grand Slam title for her, and the Stanley Cup for the Buffalo Sabres (her boyfriend, Maxim Afinogenov, plays right wing!). Shahar Peer: a pair of flattering army fatigues from Reebok. Svetlana Kuznetsova: a duet with 50 Cent. Amélie Mauresmo: her No. 1 ranking back. Martina Müller: a longer calendar year so she can play more than 31 tournaments, as she did in '07. Jill Craybas/Lilia Osterloh: see Martina Müller. Venus Williams: Clothing line EleVen to be shown at Fashion Week in New York City, as well as a Wimbledon title defense. Daniela Hantuchova: a chance to model either Williams sisters' clothing lines at Fashion Week. Samantha Stosur: to never have to see the inside of a hospital again. The Bondarenko Sisters: two-for-one tickets on Ukraine International Airlines. Maria Kirilenko: for people to stop asking if her brother, Andrei, plays for the Utah Jazz. Virginia Ruano Pasqual: for Paola Suárez to come out of retirement for one more year. Five-time women's doubles Grand Slam winner Lisa Raymond writes for SI.com every other week. | |||||||
