Arrested Development | If the Bluth family is looking for a place to re-open the Frozen Banana Stand -- "the only profitable part of the Empire" -- Westwood might be solid option. Why? Bruins wing Josh Shipp needs to eat more bananas. The L.A. Times reported that low potassium levels might have been a factor in Shipp's recent hamstring injury, and said that he's been eating bananas -- a fruit he does not like -- to combat the problem. "I eat some [bananas]," Shipp told the paper. "I'll tell [team trainers] to go buy some chocolate to put on it." George Michael could take care of that.

The blog How We Cogitate did an excellent YouTube spoof on Julian Wright's now-famous missed dunk against Colorado, weaving in footage of Southwest Airlines' "Wanna get away?" ad campaign. Wright, who was ripped by Bill Self ("I think it's frustrating because no matter what has been said, [Wright] still wants to make spectacular plays as opposed to good plays," the coach said), did not disappear for the Jayhawks' next game with Nebraska, however. After telling his teammates he was going to go into "Beast Mode" against the Huskers, Wright scored KU's first eight points and finished with 17.

We have a new candidate for sickest ending of the year. Mario Boggan's three-pointer against Texas will be a finalist. "Professor" Seth Davis said on CBS that Steve Newman's dagger for Georgia against Arkansas was the best thus far. But what the Golden Eagles' Jerel McNeal did against South Florida on Sunday might have topped them both. With the game tied 68-68 and the Bulls setting up their final shot, McNeal stole the ball with less than 10 seconds left and took it the length of the court for a game-winning layup at the buzzer. Here's the YouTube of McNeal, who told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, "I just estimated how much time was left in my head and by the time I got to half-court there was, like, five seconds left, so I knew I had time to get to the basket." As to why Marquette almost lost to lowly South Florida ... the answer was lost in the celebration.

Allentown's Morning Call went into Mike Silver-mode, rollin' with local boy-made-good Aaron Gray for a recent feature. No hos or Escalades in this story, though. There was a dog in the Pitt center's house, but it was an actual dog. We learned that Gray is a fiend for Jimmy John's ham sandwiches (he doesn't even have to order, either; they just make it when he walks in). And we learned that you're not likely to see him raging in Pittsburgh night-spots. "I think I've gone out like 10 times in my four years here," Gray said. With all those double-doubles he's been putting up (11 already), we're seeing enough of him on TV anyway.

Fans, if you hear your local coach complaining about unkind scheduling, tell him to go look at what Todd Lickliter's boys have endured thus far in 2006-07:
• Nov. 13, 14: Notre Dame and Indiana, on back-to-back days, on a neutral court in Indy. (The Bulldogs won both.) • Nov. 22, 24, 25: Tennessee and Gonzaga in the Preseason NIT in New York (Butler won both), then a trip home to face dangerous MACsters Kent State less than 24 hours later (and beat them, too). • Jan. 25, 27, 29, 31: Four Horizon League games, three of them on the road, in seven days. (All of which the Bulldogs won.)
And this team doesn't belong in the top 10?
Next three: 2/3 vs. Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2/8 at Cleveland State, 2/10 at Wright State. |
