5. I think these are my quick-hit thoughts of the playoff weekend: a. Smart job by the Chiefs re-signing Tony Gonzalez before free-agency. He would have been pursued heavily had he ever gotten to the street. b. Look for a bunch more signings of good free-agents and even more franchise-taggings. With NFL teams entering the offseason $20.5-million under the salary cap, on average -- the most money teams have ever had entering free-agency -- teams are going to be scared of their players hitting the street. You can pay them now, or you can pay them a lot more later. c. So Tom Coughlin stays. Loyal move by John Mara. But I don't think it's the best move for the franchise. Do you have any faith with this status-quo decision that the Giants will be any closer to turning the corner with Eli Manning a year from now than they are right now? d. Readers, you must really love my picks. Found that out Saturday on the field of M&T Bank Stadium walking toward the Colt bench as the clock wound down on the game. "Peter! PETER!'' one guy yelled from the stands. "I know you can hear me! Your picks suck! Where's Dallas now?!'' I heard you. The reason I didn't look up? I can't argue with you. You make a good point. e. Good thing the NFL is promoting the Prince Super Bowl appearance so heavily. It would also be a good idea to promote some of his music, because he hasn't had a song any of the human race has heard since, oh, about 1999. f. Corwin Brown got the Notre Dame defensive coordinator's job, but the guy Charlie Weis really wanted was Jim Mora. g. At 2:29 p.m. in Baltimore on Saturday, Peyton Manning began throwing balls to Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne. Rote stuff, first short and moving deeper route-by-route. The game started at 4:35 p.m. You've got to feel pretty good about your offense when its pilot takes his job so seriously. h. I owe you a dollar, Rich McKay. 6. I think Pete Carroll absolutely, positively is staying at USC. Don't believe anything else. This year, anyway, and probably a few years into the future. 7. I think Arizona made a good hire in Ken Whisenhunt. Why? When Whisenhunt got the Pittsburgh offensive coordinator job three years ago, the one thing Bill Cowher wanted was a guy who loved to run it. And Whisenhunt did, but he also loved to throw it and call plays with the imagination that Cowher loved. Whisenhunt became known as a run-lover because the Steelers became the opposite of what every offense in football had become. He called 60 percent runs in his first year as coordinator. Good for Arizona to figure that Whisenhunt is not Woody Hayes. He's not Mike Martz either. But he is a guy whom players like playing for, and he has the kind of respected flatline personality that I think players will respond to. 8. I think the next coach of the Oakland Raiders will be a guy named Steve Sarkisian. Offensive coordinator of USC. Never been a head coach before. Sort of like Al Davis going back to the future with a fuzzy-cheeked offensive pup, trying to replicate the Mike Shanahan hire. Only don't say that to him. 9. I think one of the most interesting scenes I saw this year came last Wednesday evening, when the clock struck 5:30 in Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan's office in Owings Mills, Md. There was a knock at his door. "Coach,'' secondary coach Dennis Thurman said. "I know you're having an interview now, but it's time for your yoga class.'' That's right. Rex Ryan, the large defensive schemer, goes to yoga every Wednesday night at 5:30, along with a group of team employees. 10. I think these are my non-football thoughts of the week: a. I wish just once a network announcer in a huge playoff game would see a stupid call and say, "That a really stupid decision by Coach So-and-So.'' Is that too much to ask? b. Way too much reverence on network TV. c. The Office is as funny as House is compelling. Sometime, I think The Office could be the modern Seinfeld. d. Coffeenerdness: The end of the season can't come fast enough for me and my coffee intake. Nine shots of espresso in one day, as Sunday brought, is not good. e. I'm in the middle of John Grisham's nonfiction book about two murders in Ada, Okla. It's really good. Wish I had time to read it. f. Good luck in France, Mary Beth. Remember us foreigners back in the states. And it isn't a sin to study in the study-abroad program, you know. g. Looks like Roger Clemens will be back in pinstripes this summer, sometime.
