1. Indianapolis (15-4). Smart idea by Tony Dungy, giving his team two full days off Saturday and Sunday before the mayhem that is Super Bowl Week begins. But I do think the Colts should have had more respect for the nation's media than to arrive for their first press briefing in Miami at 8:30 p.m.

2. New England (14-5). Half of the six-state region in which I grew up is still asking this morning: "Did I really see what I think I saw eight days ago? Did Peyton Manning come through in the clutch and did Tom Brady really throw an interception?''

3. San Diego (14-3). "Front desk? ... Yes, this is Mr. Belichick in room 623 ... Yes, Aloha to you too ... Uhh, do you think someone could come up and do some cleaning in my room? ... Well, I just checked in, and there's a horse's head on the bedpost in my suite ... Yes, lots of blood ... You don't have to apologize, ma'am, it's not your fault ... Well, yes, I have some idea who might have done such a thing, but I'd rather not say.''

4. Chicago (15-3). Bring it on, e-mailers. I can't wait. Get it all out of your system now, because I do not think on a neutral field the Bears are better than the Patriots or Chargers.

5. New Orleans (11-7). I hear if Tony Gonzalez hadn't signed with the Chiefs, he would have been a Saint in 2007.

6. Baltimore (13-4). Ted Ginn, Jr., sure would look good running under Steve McNair's passes in training camp this summer.

7. Philadelphia (11-7). Where there's smoke, there's fire, all you Donovan McNabb conspirators.

8. New York Jets (10-7). If I'm Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum, knowing the Patriots will almost certainly franchise or sign Asante Samuel, my free-agent focus right now is on Buffalo cornerback Nate Clements.

9. Dallas (9-8). Names to eliminate from the Dallas coaching search: Houston Nutt, Bob Stoops, Pete Carroll. Jerry Jones wants a man with some sort of NFL pedigree, which eliminates the first two, and Jones does not want to surrender control over the football operations of his team, which puts the kibosh on Carroll.

10. Seattle (10-8). Just a guess, but my feeling is the Seahawks would rather have the 22nd pick in the draft, plus the $7 million-a-year cap dollars it paid Deion Branch, back right now. Instead, New England sits there with two first-rounders, the rich getting richer, and Seattle is out of the draft business until late in the second round come April.

11. Tennessee (8-8). You know what I can't figure out? Why was owner Bud Adams telling some visitors in his stadium box this year he'd be open to draft-choice-compensation offers for Jeff Fisher, and now why is his club president, Steve Underwood, saying Fisher is not available to the Cowboys under any circumstances? Could it possibly be that the Titans are sending a message to Fisher that he'd better get serious about negotiating a long-term contract with Tennessee because the Titans have no intention of letting him out of his contract?

12. Kansas City (9-8). The Chiefs have some thinking to do about whether they're sold on Trent Green for 2007.

13. New York Giants (8-9). Love the hire of John Spagnuolo as defensive coordinator. Not only do you get a bright guy who's learned under a good play-caller, Jim Johnson, but you also get a guy who can tell you a few secrets about a division rival.

14. St. Louis (8-8). Offensive line needs a little attitude adjustment.

15. (tie) Carolina (8-8). The hire of Jeff Davidson as offensive coordinator means good things for the power running game, but I can't imagine Steve Smith is throwing any Super Bowl parties over it.

Denver (9-7). Mike Shanahan travels to Houston this fall to coach against his son. New Texans quarterback coach Kyle Shanahan is a story that's kind of been lost, hasn't it?
