1. Indianapolis (16-4). Not once did anyone think about Edgerrin James in Dolphin Stadium, not with Joseph Addai and Dominic Rhodes putting up a 264-yard rushing/receiving combo platter. What a night for them.

2. New England (14-5). On a serious note, you can't tell me that the free agents New England tries to recruit this year aren't going to look at Bill Belichick and wonder: "Are those charges that Ted Johnson made true ... the ones about being coerced to play with a concussion?''

3. San Diego (14-3). Anyone left on that San Diego coaching staff, Marty? ... Oh, and congrats LaDainian Tomlinson. Your NFL Man of the Year award is richly deserved.

4. Chicago (15-4). If they don't look for someone to seriously compete for the starting quarterback job with Rex Grossman, the Bears are making a mistake.

5. New Orleans (11-7). What a class guy, Drew Brees. Every time he opens his mouth, as he did many times during Super Bowl week as the co-NFL Man of the Year with Tomlinson, he credits someone else.

6. Baltimore (13-4). Next decision: How high to push the financial bar to keep outside linebacker Adalius Thomas, a looming free agent. My guess: not high enough. Go get him, Niners.

7. Philadelphia (11-7). I can't tell you how many hearts are with you, Andy Reid. Players, coaches, media people, front-office guys ... It's universal. I can't be a hardened journalist on this one. Good luck dealing with your sons.

8. New York Jets (10-7). The drumbeat is getting louder. Parcells to the Jets. Not saying it's going to happen. But I do think it's either a consultant's job with the Jets or a weekend job with one of the networks.

9. Dallas (9-8). Still looking like Norv to me.

10. Seattle (10-8). Tight end Jerramy Stevens won't get away in free agency. He'll either be signed long-term or franchised at $4.28 million, the franchise number for tight ends.

11. Tennessee (8-8). "I have a feeling I'll be competing with Vince Young for a lot of honors in the coming years,'' Reggie Bush said the other day after losing out in one of the rookie of the year contests to Young.

12. Kansas City (9-8). Derrick Thomas has a tough road to Canton, I believe. His presenter, Bob Gretz, does a terrific job stating Thomas' case, but my feeling is that more than a few people in the room think he was a one-dimensional player.

13. New York Giants (8-9). Spent some time on Friday night with Archie, Cooper and Eli Manning. What a good family. Ever been with Cooper? I mean, I thought he was going to put a lampshade on his head at any moment.

14. St. Louis (8-8). St. Louisans, give Bernie Miklasz a very big hand this morning. If not for the convincing case made by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch columnist, Roger Wehrli would not have made the Hall of Fame on Saturday.

15. (tie) Carolina (8-8). Saw Ricky Proehl at Colts practice the other day. Said to someone on the sidelines: "Doesn't it seem like Ricky Proehl's in the Super Bowl every year?'' You Panthers folks remember.

15. (tie) Denver (9-7). I thought the NFL should have paid some tribute to the late Darrent Williams during Super Bowl week. That was too sad a story to forget so quickly.
