Shut up and play (cont.)Posted: Tuesday March 13, 2007 11:28AM; Updated: Tuesday March 13, 2007 1:43PM
Could be. You're right about Allen. Not all of his moves have worked out, but there's a method to the madness behind them all. I think Jon Gruden loves Calvin Johnson, as do most teams in the NFL, because they've all got Johnson at the top of their draft boards. I bet the Bucs would jump on him at No. 4. Hard for me to imagine the Raiders passing on Russell, but with six weeks 'til draft day, you never know. By the way, I got several e-mails questioning my fuzzy math -- I think prompted by a profootballtalk.com item -- on the $7 million the Bucs would have coming from the pro-rated signing bonus money from Plummer if he never plays again and the Bucs go after his money. Essentially, Plummer did four contracts with the Broncos while there, and the pro-rated signing bonus comes from these sources: $3 million from the first contract, $2.4 million from the second and $1.656 million from the third. So if the Bucs choose to go after the cash, and they win, Plummer would owe them $7.056 million. Nice bit of cash to trade for a seventh-round pick. RELAX, DAVID. GIVE JERRY REESE A CHANCE. From David, of Teaneck, N.J.: "Do you think that the Giants' boneheaded decision not to fire Tom Coughlin may have something to do with their inability to sign any free agents? Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith proved that you don't have to be a tyrant to win, so why would anyone in his right mind want to play for this maniac?'' Well, we're on the same page in thinking the Giants should have made a coaching change, David. But no matter who the coach was in '07, Jerry Reese was going to play it conservatively in free-agency. The time to question the Giants will be around April 1. That's when the secondary market for free-agency will be in full swing. If the Giants don't help themselves there, then you can ask that question. But they never were going to pay stupid money for any of the players in the first week, and Dominic Rhodes didn't pass on the Giants because he thought Tom Coughlin was a nutjob. By the way, if I were the Giants, I'd deal for Olindo Mare. Very good kicker coming off a little slump in Miami. WE MUST BE LOOKING AT DIFFERENT TEAMS. From Josh Peterson, of Minneapolis: "Don't you think the Vikings are aware of the amount of money Visanthe Shiancoe is getting this year, and how people might view that? The team's front office has been one of the best in the league in recent years at working the salary cap. They front-load contracts so that the salary hit is big at first, which enables them to lower it in the future, and thus allow more cap room in subsequent years. That is why the team has a lot of cap space every year. I'm not saying that Shiancoe is the right guy to employ this strategy on, but it has worked for the team in the past.'' Hmmm. I like the guys running the Vikings, but let's call it like it is: How do you say they're doing a good job when they're 43-53 over the last six years? What you do in free agency has to mesh with what you do with your team, and though I like three of their free-agent pickups a ton -- Steve Hutchinson, Antoine Winfield, Pat Williams -- and they got good value in Chester Taylor, they still went 6-10 last year. I just think what most everyone thinks in the NFL looking at the Vikings so far in this market: They vastly overpaid for Shianco and wideout Bobby Wade, who will be used in the slot by Brad Childress. THEY MAKE 'EM CLEVER UP THERE IN THE TWIN CITIES. From Grant, of Minneapolis: "'Craig Biggio has some Tom Brady in him.' '' Did Brady knock up Biggio, too?''' Awww, that's not very nice. GREAT POINT ABOUT NICK HARPER. From Nick Brownlee, of Seattle: "Why don't you hear more about Nick Harper? Seems to me he was an instrumental player at cornerback for the Colts. Personally, I'd love to see my Broncos fleece the Redskins with another trade (Dre' Bly) and sign Harper.'' I love Harper, and you're right. I think if Nate Clements is a B-plus, Harper's a B ... and it's not very much of a gap. Whoever gets him will be getting a competitive player with good cover skills. If I'm Tennessee, I'm jacking up my offer until he says yes.
