4. I think the best place for Culpepper right now, and the place I'd do anything to get to if I were him, is with the New York Giants. I don't think it's going to happen; Coughlin doesn't want the Culpepper soap opera mucking up his make-or-break season. And the Giants are only $4.5 million under the cap, and they've got to sign their rookie class with most of that money. But I say Culpepper would be well-suited for this team because it'd be a great insurance move for 2008. The Giants have to know that it's no better than a 50-50 shot that Eli Manning will do enough in this season to enter 2008 as their no-doubt starter, particularly with the prospect of a new coach coming on board to replace Tom Coughlin. And they have to know current backups Anthony Wright and Tim Hasselbeck are just stopgap guys. Why not structure a deal with a small signing bonus that would give the club a chance to pay Culpepper a decent roster bonus in March 2008 if Culpepper is the quarterback of the near future? That way, the G-men could simply release Culpepper if Manning plays well enough to commandeer the job for the future. 5. I think Culpepper won't go far, though. My money is on the Jags. Jacksonville doesn't trust Byron Leftwich and has seen David Garrard play enough to get exposed. This would be perfect. If they sign Culpepper, that would give the Jags three quarterbacks Jack Del Rio wouldn't trust. 6. I think one final thought on Culpepper: He's not starting anywhere this year -- at least not in September. 7. I think the Patriots will keep Asante Samuel at his one-year franchise number, not sign him long-term, and see him the week before the first game. This is a player who made $721,600 last year. If he plays for the franchise number ($7.8 million), he'd be making $458,824 a week. I see a lot of sense in holding out next year and forcing the Patriots to trade him. But not this year ... not when the Patriots won't be inclined to trade him and certainly won't be inclined to send him to the Jets, who you've got to know would love to have him. 8. I think we're going to know about the Chargers quickly. Very quickly. In the first 29 days of the season, they've got Chicago at home, New England in Foxboro, Green Bay in Green Bay, Kansas City at home and Denver on the road. Two home games, and a road game apiece in Eastern, Central and Mountain time. If they go 4-1 in those five, we're all going to have to revise our Super Bowl picks. 9. I think it's interesting to see the time Roger Goodell is taking with the Pacman Jones appeal. Gives me the feeling he might actually give him a game or two less for good behavior -- if he behaves. 10. I think these are my non-football thoughts of the week: a. Thanks, one and all (including you, Mike Timlin), for making Peterpalooza the swellest birthday party a big lug could ever have. You only turn 50 once, but once is enough if it's done right, and it was. b. I think if you're a parent of a young teen or preteen girl or boy and you want to read a great book about what your high school parenting might be like, read Dan Shaughnessy's Senior Year, a recounting of his son Sam's final year of high school in Massachusetts. Ostensibly it's about Sam's pursuit of baseball greatness and a full ride to a college baseball school. But more than that it's about the treacherous waters a parent navigates with a kid in an affluent town with many of the problems (drinking, depression, lax study habits) teens sometimes face. He rightly questions why we micro-manage our kids so much today and how it hurts both us and them. I commend Shaughnessy for writing such a blunt book, because he shows the warts we see in all of our kids. It's a really good read, and for the dad who has everything except a good book, get it for a dad you know for Father's Day. He'll thank you. c. Toughen up, Paris Hilton. d. I can't believe I just included Paris Hilton in this column. I should be ashamed. e. Coffeenerdness: you know it's your birthday, and you must be very hard to buy for, when you get six Starbucks cards as gifts. f. Someone delivered five cases of Heineken Light to my house Friday. In cans. A lovely gift. The gift of life. I just wish I knew who sent it so I could thank him/her/them/it. g. The Yankees live. Should be a fun summer.
