Did you have anything to do with this?
"Jenna Fischer of The Office, and her husband, filmmaker James Gunn, have separated after six years of marriage, Fischer's publicist, Lewis Kay, said Friday."

--Matt, Grand Rapids, Mich.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

JENNA FISCHER IS NOW SINGLE! Will you ask her out now?
--Brian Mueleaner, Des Plaines, Ill.

OK, you got me -- I found out about it almost as she announced it. I happened to be checking my MySpace page and saw I had a "blog post notification" for the only blog I subscribe to: Jenna's. So you can imagine just how far my jaw dropped when I opened it and read this:

"We [James and Jenna] need to announce that we have chosen to separate. We are sorry for any pain this causes family and friends." It went on from there.

First of all, I'm not one to make light of someone's marital discord, unless it's a really trashy celebrity (Britney). One of the biggest reasons I developed a celebrity crush on Jenna in the first place is her very genuine, Midwest persona (like mine!). It's not like they were some Hollywood power couple. They'd been together since before anyone outside her friends and family even knew the name Jenna Fischer, so it's not exactly appropriate for us be fist-pumping about this one.

That said, we did have a celebrity crush on this girl for a whole year, and now that she's single, it's only natural that would it elicit some feelings. However, as you know, the Mailbag moved on. We have perfectly good new Crush, Jordana Spiro, who herself happens to be single and who has done never done anything to disappoint us ... until now.

(Cue suspenseful music.)

In light of Jenna's "statement," I figured it would be both fitting and amusing if Jordana and I issued our own statement squelching any rumors and affirming our current status. Unfortunately, when I contacted TBS' publicity department, who were so helpful in lining up our original interview, I was informed that because My Boys' season just ended, they no longer had "access" to Jordana and I would need to go through her Hollywood manager. So I contacted her manager, who apparently forwarded my e-mail to her big-shot, Hollywood p.r. agency, whose representative (since it's my only reference, I pictured Shauna from Entourage) promptly told me they wanted no part of it.

"We don't comment on our client's personal lives," she said.

I figured there had to be some sort of misunderstanding. Perhaps this person hadn't seen the original Mailbag, had no idea what the Celebrity Crush was, and had taken me a little too literally. So as a follow-up, I actually wrote out the statement and asked for her approval. This is what I wrote:

"Contrary to recent rumors, Stewart and Jordana would like everyone to know that they are very happy in their current status as Mailbag Crush and Crushee and will continue to support each other throughout the rest of the 2007 football season. Stewart, in fact, was delighted to hear that Jordana's show has been picked up for a third season. He is saving a seat for her at Rosh Hashana services this week, because, as he said, 'you never know.' "

P.r. big-wig's response (paraphrased): "Ha ha, very funny, but sorry, not signing off on it."

Are you kidding me? By now, I was kind of peeved. Not even Lloyd Carr is this overprotective and humorless. On the one hand, I don't want to hold it against Jordana, since it wasn't her doing, but at the same time -- this person supposedly "represents" her interests. And the message I'm getting is that Jordana is not all that "interested" in being the Celebrity Crush.

So here's what I'm going to do. I'm giving Jordana until next week's Mailbag, which goes up Sept. 19, to re-affirm her commitment. I'm confident she'll get in touch (and it has to be her, not one of her "people"), because I know just how cool she really is (that's why I picked her in the first place). When she does, all will be right in Crush world.

If not ... well, then all bets are off. There's a whole lot of under-the-radar starlets out there who would kill to be the Mailbag Crush -- and there's one in particular who's probably feeling a little bit down right now and could probably use some cheering up.
