NCAA Football Power Rankings
Rank LW Team
11 -- Where have you been, Thomas Brown? The Bulldogs' injury-plagued senior running back broke out for a career day (16 carries, 180 yards, three TDs) against Ole Miss. If UGA can start producing a consistent running game with Brown and freshman Knowshon Moreno, watch out.
Last game: Beat Ole Miss, 45-17.
Next game: Saturday at Tennessee.
12 -- I have to respectfully disagree with my colleague Gene Menez; if Heisman ballots were due today, Wildcats QB Andre Woodson would be in everyone's top three. It's hard to argue with these numbers: 67 percent completions, 1,309 yards and a staggering 16-to-1 TD-to-interception ratio.
Last game: Beat Florida Atlantic, 45-17.
Next game: Thursday at South Carolina.
13 -- Speaking of Woodson, he'll provide a pretty telling litmus test for the Gamecocks' defense sans Jasper Brinkley. They held up admirably against Mississippi State, allowing just 258 total yards, but the Bulldogs had almost no passing attack. The Wildcats present a more balanced attack.
Last game: Beat Mississippi State, 38-21.
Next game: Thursday vs. Kentucky.
14 -- There's at least one explanation why Florida's offense looked so out of sorts against Auburn (besides the Tigers' defense, of course). Coordinator Dan Mullen had his appendix removed less than 24 hours before the game. Perhaps that's how the Gators forgot they have running backs.
Last game: Lost to Auburn, 20-17.
Next game: Saturday at LSU.
15 -- Different coach, same result. Just as Bill Snyder's Wildcats used to win games (including quite a few over Texas) with an emphasis on defense and special teams, Ron Prince's squad scored touchdowns against the 'Horns on an interception return, a punt return and a kickoff return.
Last game: Beat Texas, 41-21.
Next game: Saturday vs. Kansas.
16 -- For months, folks predicted Saturday's Nebraska-Missouri game would decide the Big 12 North's champion. It's even bigger now for the Tigers, following last week's victories by K-State and Colorado. Clearly, the division is wide open, but Mizzou brings the most firepower.
Last game: Beat Illinois State, 38-17.
Next game: Saturday vs. Nebraska.
17 -- Some impressive numbers have been circulating in the wake of Auburn's win over Florida. Tommy Tuberville is now 5-0 against top five teams and 9-1 since 2004 against top 10 opponents. Now, if he can just get his team to stop losing to unranked teams, Auburn will have itself a dynasty.
Last game: Beat Florida, 20-17.
Next game: Saturday vs. Vanderbilt.
18 -- Perhaps a kick in the butt from former star Vince Young might help these reeling Horns. "We don't need all this off-the-field stuff," the visiting Titans QB told the Dallas Morning News after Saturday's K-State loss. "This team right here has all the talent in the world. They just need to pull together."
Last game: Lost to Kansas State, 41-21.
Next game: Saturday vs. Oklahoma.
19 -- QB Xavier Lee is the man of the hour in Tallahassee right now ... but what about Everette Brown and the 'Noles' defense? Two weeks before holding Alabama scoreless for three quarters, FSU went to Boulder and held Colorado to just six points -- 21 less than Oklahoma could last weekend.
Last game: Beat Alabama, 21-14.
Next game: Saturday vs. N.C. State.
20 -- Speaking of teams that have beaten Colorado (33-14 on Sept. 8), it's a shame the Sun Devils' Pac-10 schedule is so back-loaded. I'm itching to find out just how good they really are. We'll have to wait until Oct. 27, when ASU hosts Cal (followed by games against Oregon, UCLA and USC).
Last game: Beat Stanford, 41-3.
Next game: Saturday at Washington State.
