NCAA Football Power Rankings
Rank LW Team
11 4 The Eagles live and die with their Heisman-aspiring quarterback, whose 415 passing yards kept them in last week's game against Florida State, but whose third interception proved to be a dagger. That No. 2 ranking is shot, but Matt Ryan is certainly still capable of leading them to an ACC title.
Last game: Lost to Florida State, 27-17.
Next game: Saturday at Maryland.
12 14 The Tigers' winning formula of late has been an overpowering defense (No. 8 nationally) and the minimal amount of necessary offense (No. 92). If they can find a way to make it work both against Georgia this weekend and Alabama in the Iron Bowl, they may be looking at a BCS at-large berth.
Last game: Beat Tennessee Tech, 35-3.
Next game: Saturday at Georgia.
13 15 While the Gators' rout of Vanderbilt featured remarkable performances by Tim Tebow (366 total yards, five TDs) and Percy Harvin (20 touches, 223 yards), the more amazing feat came from Florida's injury-depleted defense, which held Vandy to 255 total yards and forced three turnovers.
Last game: Beat Vanderbilt, 49-22.
Next game: Saturday at South Carolina.
14 16 Despite coming off a heartbreaking loss, playing on the road and missing their jerseys, Sean Glennon and the Hokies turned in their finest performance of the season at Georgia Tech. The once-woeful offensive line has improved tremendously, allowing Glennon to have more success.
Last game: Beat Georgia Tech, 24-3.
Next game: Saturday vs. Florida State.
15 18 DE Everson Griffin was one of the nation's most sought-after recruits last winter, and Saturday night we found out why. The freshman notched 3.5 sacks in an overall dominating performance by USC's defense. They needed it, as the John David Booty-led offense was once again average.
Last game: Beat Oregon State, 24-3.
Next game: Saturday at Cal.
16 12 No, the Huskies didn't do anything wrong last weekend. Unfortunately, however, I think I erred in debuting the Huskies so high the week before, because I don't honestly believe they're better than several of the teams I had below them. I had to correct my mistake. My sincere apologies, UConn fans.
Last game: Beat Rutgers, 38-19.
Next game: Saturday at Cincinnati.
17 17 Despite Mike Hart being limited to just three second-half carries, Michigan rallied from a 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit behind the Chad Henne-to-Mario Manningham connection. Manningham finished with eight catches for 129 yards and two TDs, including the 31-yard game-winner.
Last game: Beat Michigan State, 28-24.
Next game: Saturday at Wisconsin.
18 -- This ranking comes with the requisite disclaimer that I have little faith in a Tommy Bowden team to finish the season unscathed. But it's hard to find fault with the Tigers' past three wins (Central Michigan, Maryland and Duke), which have come by an average victory margin of 49.0-13.7.
Last game: Beat Duke, 47-10.
Next game: Saturday vs. Wake Forest.
19 -- FSU's rousing road upset of BC was so out of character from its previous eight games that even Bobby Bowden wonders whether it will carry over to Saturday's Virginia Tech game. "It's been so long since we've been able to mingle successfully with the upper crust," the coach marveled.
Last game: Beat Boston College, 27-17.
Next game: Saturday at Virginia Tech.
20 19 The youthful Tide's near-upset of LSU confirmed what many around the SEC have feared since Nick Saban was hired: Alabama is going to be really good next season (and the recruits haven't even arrived yet). "We're going to have a good program," Saban proclaimed afterward.
Last game: Lost to LSU, 41-34.
Next game: Saturday at Mississippi State.
