NCAA Football Power Rankings
Rank LW Team
21 23 Did you see mogul and newfound-Mike Leach comrade Donald Trump sent a taunting letter to Miami president Donna Shalala reminding her she "should have listened to him" when he recommended Leach for the job now held by Randy Shannon. Amusing, yet slightly disturbing.
Last game: Beat Oklahoma, 34-27.
Next game: Bowl game TBA.
22 16 Al Groh's Cavaliers may have come up short in their quest for an ACC division title, but the seventh-year coach did succeed in one mission this season: making me look like a complete idiot for listing him No. 1 on last summer's worst-coaches list. Whoops. Maybe it gave him good luck.
Last game: Lost to Virginia Tech, 33-21.
Next game: Bowl game TBA.
23 24 It wasn't necessarily easy, but the Bearcats eventually put away Syracuse last weekend to lock up their first nine-win season since 1953. Next goal: Staving off potential suitors for coach Brian Kelly, who is believed to be on the wish lists at Michigan, Nebraska and ... umm, Notre Dame?
Last game: Beat Syracuse, 52-31.
Next game: Bowl game TBA.
24 -- There was a week in October when the Bulls sat atop these rankings -- and if not for three losses by a combined 15 points, they might still. Following that three-game swoon, USF closed out the regular season with wins by 31, 38 and 11 points to earn an invitation to the Dec. 31 Sun Bowl.
Last game: Beat Pittsburgh, 48-37.
Next game: Dec. 31 vs. TBA, Sun Bowl.
25 -- For the second straight year, the Cougars wrapped up a Mountain West title and knocked off rival Utah with some last-second heroics. This time, QB Max Hall completed a 49-yard pass on fourth-and-18 to set up Harvey Unga's game-winning 11-yard touchdown run with 38 seconds remaining.
Last game: Beat Utah, 17-10.
Next game: Saturday at San Diego State.
Dropped out: Boise State, Connecticut.
