Quite a few teams took the week off so players could focus on final exams. We didn't. Here is the latest version of the weekly power rankings.
|NCAA Basketball Power Rankings|
Tennessee Lady Vols (7-0)
Yes. They're still undefeated. This could go throughout the season -- the Lady Vols are just strong at every position. Any team looking to knock them off during the regular season will need to put together a great performance on an off night for the Lady Vols.
Next three: 12/13 vs. Middle Tennessee; 12/16 vs. Gonzaga; 12/19 at UCLA
UConn Huskies (7-0)
The play of newcomer Maya Moore has overshadowed Tina Charles' strong season for the Huskies. Perhaps Charles prefers the spotlight on someone else -- the forward is racking up an average 14.1 points and a team-high eight rebounds a game.
Next three: 12/17 vs. South Carolina; 12/21 at San Diego State; 12/29
Maryland Terrapins (13-1)
The Terrapins are back on a roll after that eight-point loss at Rutgers with an offensive balance reminiscent of their '06 national-title season. Four players are scoring at least 12 points a game, making it tough for defenses to key on one player or even one area of the floor.
Next three: 12/20 at James Madison; 12/29 vs. Richmond; 12/30 vs. UMBC
Rutgers Scarlet Knights (6-2)
With a tough schedule to start the season, the Scarlet Knights have jumped right into things and lost just two games by a total of seven points. Giving up just 48.6 points a game, the they do a great job of keeping themselves in the game.
Next three: 12/10 vs. California; 12/12 at Princeton; 12/30 vs. Temple
UNC Tar Heels (10-1)
Even with new players, the Tar Heels are as fun as ever to watch: They run, they steal, they score loads of points and force opponents into 25 turnovers a game. Piling up 91.8 points a game, they're averaging 32 more than their troubled foes.
Next three: 12/17 at Coastal Carolina; 12/20 vs. Western Kentucky; 12/20 vs. Western Kentucky
