Yanks interested in signing Sexson

The Yankees are seriously considering signing just-released first baseman Richie Sexson.

Sexson's due to clear waivers Sunday, and his agent Casey Close said on Saturday he'll probably take the weekend to decide where he'll play among the handful of teams that have shown interest. As an American League team with a need for a righthanded bat, the Yankees are a team that would provide an opportunity to contend and play.

Sexson will make about $14 million this season, as part of a $50 million multiyear contract. When he clears release waivers next week, Sexson can be signed for a prorated share of the $390,000 minimum salary.

Sexson, released Thursday by the Mariners, hit .218 with 11 home runs and 30 RBIs with Seattle. However, he hit .344 vs. lefthanded pitching. Yankees manager Joe Girardi recently said that a righthanded hitter was the team's greatest need.

"We may extend an offer. I can't say that we will, and I can't say we won't,'' Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said by phone. "I have to talk to (Girardi) to see how he'd fit.''

The New York Post first reported news of the Yankees' potential interest in Sexson.
