Yankees renew Joba at $390,000Posted: Wednesday March 5, 2008 8:19PM; Updated: Wednesday March 5, 2008 8:19PM Yankees sensation Joba Chamberlain and Marlins superstar shortstop Hanley Ramirez were among several players whose contracts were unilaterally renewed by their teams Wednesday. Chamberlain, whose careful handling by the Yankees during his sensational rookie season was dubbed the "Joba Rules," was renewed at the major league minimum salary of $390,000. A renewal occurs when the sides can't agree on a salary and the player doesn't have enough service time to qualify for arbitration. The Yankees, with a $200 million payroll, used their right to keep Chamberlain's pay low. In a split contract, which is typical for non-arbitration players, Chamberlain will be paid at the rate of $69,000 during any time he spends in the minors, according to filings obtained by SI.com. Ramirez was renewed by the Marlins at $439,000 after an MVP-caliber season. Several other Marlins were also renewed: Dan Uggla for $417,000, Jeremy Hermida for $395,000, Matt Lindstrom for $395,000, Renyel Pinto for $392,500 and Anibal Sanchez for $390,000. Prince Fielder spoke out when the Brewers recently renewed his contract at $670,000. Red Sox star closer Jonathan Papelbon has expressed disappointment about the way his negotiations' are going. Papelbon made $435,000 last year. "I'm at the mercy of the club right now to a certain extent,'' Papelbon said. |
