| Sources: MLB won't let Cuban buy Cubs |
Throw out Sam Zell's idea of selling the Cubs by the end of the year because he still hasn't reached his goal of narrowing the field from five bidders to two. And sources close to commissioner Bud Selig sounded an alarm this week during the annual general managers meetings: Forget about Mark Cuban buying the Cubs. Cuban, the Dallas Mavericks' owner, was the fan favorite, the guy who liked to drink beer, watch the game from the bleachers and spend money. He was the most appealing bidder to Zell's group, who knew Cuban could swing the quickest transaction for a team and ballpark that at one time figured to fetch $1 billion. Global financial crisis or not, baseball's old guard plans to stand firm against letting Cuban into the club. "There's no way Bud and the owners are going to let that happen," a Major League Baseball source said this week. "Zero chance." This would be a blow to Zell and Cubs fans who are eager to get finality on a team that's in limbo.(Chicago Sun-Times)

| Redskins on Hall's list |
The Washington Redskins are among the teams free agent cornerback DeAngelo Hall is considering after clearing waivers yesterday, according to his agent, Joe Segal. Segal would not comment on how many teams are pursuing Hall, or on specifics of offers, but said the former Virginia Tech star is intrigued by the possibility of signing with Washington. Four or five teams are believed to be seriously courting Hall, who could make a decision by tomorrow, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Hall would be willing to take a short-term deal, according to a source. (Washington Post)

| Knicks vying for Harrington |
The Knicks are among about a half-dozen teams that have made inquiries about 6-9 forward Al Harrington, who is awaiting a trade from the Golden State. The Knicks likely would want to offer buried-on-the-bench center Eddy Curry, whose salary is a close match, but a person with knowledge of the Warriors' thinking said Curry does not fit with their up-tempo system, either. The Charlotte Observer this week reported that the Bobcats could look to get involved in a Knicks-Warriors trade situation as a third team, perhaps with interest in Curry. (Newsday)
