Americans Davis, Rodriguez win speedskating event

NAGANO, Japan (AP) -- Americans Shani Davis and Jennifer Rodriguez each won a 1,000-meter race at a speedskating World Cup meet Saturday.

Davis finished in 1 minute, 09.21 seconds to beat Denny Morrison of Canada, who was 0.19 seconds off the pace. South Korea's Lee Kyou-hyuk finished third in 1:09.43.

Japan's Keiichiro Nagashima won the 500 with a time of 34.81 to finish ahead of China's Yu Fengtong, who clocked 34.91.

Rodriguez won in 1:16.34 to edge Canada's Christine Nesbitt by 0.05 seconds. Kristina Groves of Canada was third in 1:16.62.

Germany's Jenny Wolf easily won the 500 in 37.71, comfortably ahead of South Korea's Lee Sang-hwa.

Olsson gets first Cup win in 15K cross-country

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) -- Johan Olsson of Sweden won the 15-kilometer classic event in a World Cup cross-country meet on Saturday, taking the lead in the overall standings.

Olsson finished in 40 minutes, 10.0 seconds for his first individual World Cup victory and first podium finish, 10.5 seconds ahead of Axel Teichmann of Germany.

Early leader Sami Jauhojaervi of Finland was 28.5 seconds back to place third.

Olsson moved from 11th place to first in the overall World Cup standings with 186 points.

In the women's 10-kilometer classic, Virpi Kuitunen won in 29 minutes, 51.0 seconds, 18 seconds ahead of fellow Finn Aino-Kaisa Saarinen. Marit Bjoergen of Norway, the Olympic 10K silver medalist, was third.

Saarinen leads the overall World Cup standings with 365 points, followed by Kuitunen (269).

Svendsen, Beck win biathlon pursuits in Austria

HOCHFILZEN, Austria (AP) -- Emil Hegle Svendsen of Norway won a 12.5-kilometer pursuit Saturday for his second World Cup victory in as many days, while Martina Beck of Germany won the women's 10K race to go atop the overall standings.

It was Svendsen's third win of the season and ninth overall.

After winning a 10-kilometer sprint Friday, Svendsen started first in Saturday's pursuit and kept the lead throughout despite missing three targets. He finished in 35 minutes, 46.3 seconds.

Defending overall World Cup champion Ole Einar Bjorndalen took second for his second podium finish of the season. Bjorndalen missed twice in his third shooting and finished 9.4 seconds behind Svendsen.

Tomasz Sikora of Poland had three misses before finishing third, 12.0 seconds behind.

Svendsen, Bjorndalen and Sikora share the lead in the pursuit standings on 108 points, while Svendsen extended his lead in the overall standings to 276 points. Sikora is second with 234, Germany's Michael Greis third with 200, and Bjorndalen fourth with 197.

Beck won the women's pursuit for her second World Cup victory of the season after winning in Ostersund, Sweden, last week.

Beck missed just once and finished in 33 minutes, 41.2 seconds.

Svetlana Sleptsova of Russia missed four targets and took second, 18.3 seconds behind.

Simone Hauswald, who won Friday's sprint event, led the race until missing two targets in her third shooting. The German finished third, 19.2 seconds behind Beck.

Beck overtook Ekaterina Iourieva of Russia, who was seventh, in the overall standings with 224 points. Sleptsova is second with 219 and Tora Berger of Norway third with 206.

The meet in Hochfilzen ends with a men's and women's relay on Sunday.

Ammann wins ski jump to widen World Cup lead

PRAGELATO, Italy (AP) -- Simon Ammann of Switzerland set a hill record with a leap of 144 meters to win his third ski jump World Cup event of the season and widen his lead in the overall standings.

Ammann's second jump through a thick fog was enough to overtake Austria's Gregor Schlierenzauer, who had the lead after the first jump and finished second. Finnish 18-year-old Ville Larinto climbed from ninth place after the first jump to finish third and earn his second spot on the podium this season.

The victory gives Ammann 345 points and a 40-point lead over Schlierenzauer after four events. Larinto is third with 205 points.

The ski jumpers will be at the Pragelato site again on Sunday for another meet. With heavy snow expected overnight and early Sunday, there will be no qualifying jumps and all 61 jumpers enrolled will automatically qualify for the competition.

Rommel on roll in skeleton race

IGLS, Austria (AP) -- Frank Rommel of Germany won his second straight skeleton World Cup race Saturday.

Rommel trailed Russia's Alexander Tretiakov by 0.05 seconds after the opening heat, but posted the fastest time in the second to finish in an aggregate time of 1 minute, 46.01 seconds.

Tretiakov took second, 0.25 behind Rommel, while Martins Dukurs of Latvia finished third with a 0.37-second deficit. Jeff Pain of Canada was fourth, another 0.17 behind.

The 24-year-old Rommel had his maiden victory in Altenberg, Germany, last week.

After three of eight events, Dukurs leads the overall World Cup standings on 610 points ahead of Florian Fassl of Germany with 593. Tretiakov is third with 572, while Rommel is eighth with 450.

The skeleton World Cup circuit continues in Cesana, Italy, next weekend.

Florschuetz breaks through with bobsled win

IGLS, Austria (AP) -- Thomas Florschuetz of Germany guided his team a two-man bobsled victory Saturday for his first World Cup victory. Steven Holcomb and Justin Olsen of the United States finished third.

Florschuetz and partner Marc Kuehne led after the opening heat and finished the two runs in 1 minute, 44.62 seconds at the Olympia track.

Beat Hafti and Thomas Lamparter of Switzerland were second in 1:44.70. Holcomb and Olsen had the fastest second heat and were 0.13 seconds behind the winners.

"It's good to be in the top three," Holcomb said in a release. "The second heat was canceled last week in the four-man race, and I feel like we lost a medal because of it. Today is a statement that you can't keep us out."

World champion Andre Lange of Germany had to replace regular partner Kevin Kuske with Martin Putze and finished fourth.

Hafti leads the overall World Cup standings with 635 points. He is followed by Lange (627), Matthias Hoepfner (568) and Holcomb (538).

Zoeggeler gets first luge win of season

WINTERBERG, Germany (AP) -- Two-time Olympic champion Armin Zoeggeler of Italy won a World Cup luge race Saturday for his first victory of the season.

The win gave Zoeggeler the lead in overall standings after three of nine races.

Zoeggeler beat four Germans with an aggregate time of 1 minute, 46.490 seconds.

Two-time world champion David Moeller was .022 seconds back and Johannes Ludwig finished third.

"I had two perfect runs. I never expected to win this race. I would have been satisfied with a place on the podium," Zoeggeler said.

Zoeggeler now has 255 points, with Moeller second in 240.

Italy had another win when Christian Oberstolz and Patrick Gruber took the doubles race.
