Finance report shows grim future for Kentucky horse racing

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- A report by a state government task force paints a grim picture of the future of horse racing in Kentucky if the agency that regulates the sport doesn't get more cash soon.

The report released Monday concludes the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission must increase its budget at least $2 million to fund several recent regulations, including a ban on steroids. Only a small portion of that increase would come from the state government, which is under a budget crunch.

Much more would be necessary to bring Kentucky into parity with other major racing states, such as California and Florida.

The racing commission was expected to discuss the report at a meeting Monday afternoon before it is sent to Gov. Steve Beshear and the General Assembly for consideration.
