Jamaica vs. Grenada for Caribbean final |
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) -- Jamaica defeated Guadeloupe 2-0 and Grenada upset Cuba 6-5 in a penalty shootout in the Caribbean championship semifinals on Thursday. Jamaica and Grenada will return to the National Stadium on Sunday for the final. Jamaica won the last of its three Caribbean titles in 2005. It was coming off a World Cup qualifying campaign in which it won its last three matches all at home but missed out on advancing on goal difference. Grenada was runner-up in the inaugural tournament in 1989 and hadn't been back to the final until now. It eliminated Trinidad and Tobago to reach the semifinals, and qualified for CONCACAF's Gold Cup for the first time. Oneil Thompson scored in the 11th minute off a header to put Jamaica ahead, and Luton Shelton doubled the lead in the 57th with a spectacular solo goal when he received the ball in midfield, outran one defender and dribbled past two more before slotting past the Guadeloupe goalkeeper. Grenada and Cuba finished 2-2 after regular and extra time. Kithson Bain, who scored a hat trick against Barbados on Sunday, scored the equalizer for Grenada in the 80th minute. Joel Colome (15th) and Roberto Linares (33rd) with a goal in his third straight game put Cuba ahead, while Ricky Charles started off Grenada from a penalty. Copyright 2008 Associated Press.
