Players are committing earlier and earlier these days. How early? Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei quarterback Matt Barkley, one of the nation's top prospects for the class of 2009, already announced his commitment to USC.
But there still are a few players in the Class of 2008 who have yet to announce their decisions. Here's an update on some of the best uncommitted players.
Julio Jones (SI/Takkle No. 1 overall prospect)
WR, 6-4/215
Foley, Ala. (Foley High)
The favorite: Alabama
The contenders: Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma, Texas Tech
Update: Jones and his camp have revealed few specifics about his recruitment. Reached Wednesday, his mother, Queen Marvin, said her son is "still taking visits." Jones already has visited Alabama, Florida State and Florida. Earlier this month, he said he planned to wait until national signing day on Feb. 6 to reveal his choice.
Darrell Scott (SI/Takkle No. 2)
RB, 6-0/204
Ventura, Calif. (St. Bonaventure)
The favorite: Texas
The sleeper: Colorado
Update: St. Bonaventure assistant/recruiting coordinator Roger Sonsini said Scott has narrowed his options to two schools, but Scott probably won't make a public announcement until Signing Day. While Colorado wouldn't normally stay in the hunt for such a high-rated out-of-state prospect, it has an advantage in this case. Scott's uncle, Josh Smith, is a rising junior receiver in Boulder.
Terrelle Pryor (SI/Takkle No. 16)
QB, 6-6/235
Jeannette, Pa. (Jeannette High)
The contenders: Michigan, Ohio State
The sleepers: Oregon, LSU
Update: Pryor is expected to visit Oregon this weekend. Last weekend, he was accompanied to Michigan by Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch, whom Pryor has leaned on for advice during the recruiting process. Pryor is scheduled to announce his choice at 12:05 p.m. on signing day.
DeAndre Brown (SI/Takkle No. 27)
WR, 6-6/208
Ocean Springs, Miss. (Ocean Springs High)
The contenders: LSU, Ole Miss
The sleepers: Florida, Southern Miss
Update: Ocean Springs coach Todd Mangum told Rivals.com this week that Brown may visit Southern Miss this weekend, and Brown is scheduled to go to LSU during the final weekend for visits. Brown does not have an announcement scheduled yet.
Jerrell Harris (SI/Takkle No. 59)
LB, 6-2/220
Gadsden, Ala. (Gadsden City High)
The contenders: Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Tennessee, USC
Update: Harris already has visited Alabama, Auburn and Clemson and plans to see USC and Tennessee on the final two weekends prior to national signing day. Gadsden City coach Joe Billingsley said Harris will announce his choice at a press conference at 3 p.m. on Signing Day.
Alonzo Lawrence (SI/Takkle NR)
DB, 6-1/187
Lucedale, Miss. (George County High)
The contenders: Alabama, Miami, Ole Miss
Update: Lawrence is scheduled to visit Miami this weekend, George County coach Al Jones told Rivals.com on Thursday. Lawrence already has visited Alabama and Ole Miss. The cornerback, who fared well in a regular-season game against DeAndre Brown and in an all-star game against Julio Jones, is scheduled to announce his choice on Signing Day.
Brandon Harris (SI/Takkle NR)
DB, 5-10/174
Miami (Booker T. Washington High)
The contenders: Florida, Miami
The sleepers: LSU, Ohio State
Update: Harris could bolster already highly rated classes at Miami or Florida, but Hurricanes and Gators fans will have to wait until signing day to learn where Harris is headed. Booker T. Washington coach Tim Harris, Brandon's father and the reigning USA Today national coach of the year, told The Miami Herald that Brandon will announce his choice at 1:05 p.m. on Signing Day.
