The Chargers have hired former Kansas City assistant Charlie Joiner as their wide receivers coach and could be on the verge of hiring former Falcons assistant Ollie Wilson to be running backs coach, a team source said Wednesday.

Both men have ties to the organization. Joiner was a Hall of Fame receiver with the Chargers during the Air Coryell Era, and Wilson was an assistant with the Chargers from 1997 to 2001. He worked one season with All-Pro running back LaDainian Tomlinson.

On Tuesday, coach Norv Turner terminated the contracts of receivers coach James Lofton after six seasons and running backs coach Matt Simon after one season. Lofton, a Hall of Fame wideout, will be replaced by another Hall of Famer in Joiner, whose San Diego home was destroyed in the recent wildfires.

In other news, quarterback Philip Rivers had successful surgery to repair the torn ACL in his right knee. He will not participate in offseason workouts, but is expected to make a full recovery by June or July.
