Five thoughts from the women's final at Roland Garros.

Ana Ivanovic Come on Down.

Just when the WTA needed a new star, Ana Ivanovic stepped in to fill the vacuum. A Grand Slam finalist twice before, the Serb made good on her new No. 1 ranking, winning her first Slam. After two solid weeks of tennis, she played a poised, balanced match today and beat Dinara Safina 6-4, 6-3. The key moment of the match: Ivanovic squandered several break points to go up 5-2. Instead, it's 4-3 and the momentum is potentially swinging. Ivanovic steadies and wins the next eight points. Just as a champion would do.

Ivanovic has a surprisingly diversified game.

We all knew that she could serve and pound away from the baseline -- off the forehand side especially. But she showed a nice range of skills Saturday. She scampered for balls and prolonged points with the squash shot. She changed pace with slices. After two flops on the stage of Grand Slam finals, this was an awfully comprehensive performance.

Nice to have a competitive women's final.

For the past few Slams -- and the past seven years in France -- the women's final has failed to live up to the hype. Though Saturday's match was packed with pressure -- both players gunning for their first Slam -- nerves appeared to be at a minimum. Though the match ended in straight sets, it was a competitive, high-quality, nearly two-hour affair won by the winner and not lost by the loser. Well done.

Keep an eye on Dinara Safina.

The Russian's 12-match win streak was snapped Saturday. But what a roll she's on. The player who lost in the first round of the Australian Open has beaten Justine Henin, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the past month. (She's also won nearly $1 million in that time.) Even in defeat Saturday, she showed enough power to compensate for mediocre movement. If family history is any indication, the boom times might not last. But watching her play, one wonders why she isn't a permanent top 5er.

It was good tournament for the WTA.

The abrupt retirement of Justine Henin -- the three-time champ in Paris -- before the tournament threatened to cast a pall over the event. Instead, we witnessed the emergence of Ivanovic, more inspired tennis from Safina, some encouraging cameos (Alize Cornet, Agnes Szavay, Kaia Kanepi), all suggesting that the WTA will be fine.
