Thinking about headcases, and is the tennis season over yet?
No really, WITWGOW Amelie Mauresmo?
I sense she's trying to decide whether to retire or whether to "amp up" for one more run. And while she contemplates her future, she's lost focus on the present. We wrote earlier about the "greatness spigot," i.e. an athlete reaches the pinnacle and says, "Now that I've proven to myself I can win a prize, I'm going to get greedy." Mauresmo seems to have a different reaction to winning the prize. "Whew, now I can retire happy." Ever since, motivation has been hard to come by.
What in the world makes Patty Schnyder and Anna-Lena Groenfeld such a great doubles team!?!?
The term "hater" is simply slang for "critic of the successful". It has absolutely no racial implications. Don't you live in N.Y.C.? I expected you to be hipper than that. I'm sure even kids in good ol' Alaska know what "hater" means. You lost some cool points on that. I'm no fan of the Williams sisters, but i have to call you out on that one.
Dude -- are the kids still using the word dude? -- I'm no longer in the 18-34 demographic and I have two kids. Whatever minor claims I ever had to cool, have long since dissolved in the bottom of a Dora juicebox.
That guy who's got a Fedish is probably a Federast. Myself, I like the eFedrine high and, I bet, when he is gone, the withdrawal symptoms will be very acute.
That eFedrine is on the banned substance list. Federast, however, is a gem.
I missed your ATP Bench press question earlier, but I would have to say that any player who went through the American college tennis system will out bp almost anyone else on the tour with perhaps the already mentioned exceptions of guys like Tsonga, Nadal and Moya. Roddick also is a big guy and one of the larger players today, though he looks like he's slimmed down a bit.
Good point about college tennis. And Roddick ought to make the list on the basis of this alone.
Auburn University-Montgomery nearly swept the ITA's "Super Bowl" of Small College Tennis at the 2008 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships hosted by the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama where the NCAA Division II and II, NAIA and Junior College title-winners face off to determine overall champions.
Our friend Deepak sends this tennis-themed Letterman top ten list.
From the ITA: "For the first time, the 2008 ITA Collegiate Wheelchair Tennis Championships took place in conjunction with the ITA National Small College Championships, hosted by the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. It featured several of the nation's top collegiate varsity wheelchair players.

Interesting Andre Agassi story from Las Vegas Review Journal.
Where in the world is Slobodan Zivojinovic? Ivana of Belgrade writes:
The guy is head of Serbian tennis association. He also runs an entertainment company with his wife, a famous Serbian singer. They have two mutual kids, Bobo has one more from previous relationships.
Apropos of nothing: Federer's current doubles ranking is 576.
Curious early week results. In Basel:
[Q] B Becker (GER) d. S Wawrinka (SUI) 3-6 7-6(5) 7-6(5). After his Olympics gold and top ten cameo, Stan Wawrinka seems to be running out of gas a bit. The following night Bobby Reynolds takes a set off of Federer!
[WC] J Ouanna (FRA) d. I Ljubicic (CRO) 6-7(2), 7-6(5), 6-4.
That's Josselin Ouanna. As if France needed more intriguing prospects.
- In Luxembourg, Laura Robson (haven't heard of her? Ask a British friend) took a set off veteran Iveta Benesova before losing in three sets.
Arantxa Rus of The Netherlands, the No. 1 player in the ITF World Junior Tennis Rankings, has entered the 2008 Dunlop Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships, tournament director Lew Brewer announced. The 62nd Annual Dunlop Orange Bowl, held December 7-14, is the last major (Grade A) international junior championship of the 2008 season.
Raghavender Harnal, Johnston, R.I.: When Umpires take bathroom breaks............players take over. (Stick with this, it's hilarious)
This week's long lost siblings:
Courtney Spelman, Roseville, Calif.
Have a great week, everyone!
