Michigan State Spartans (16-2)
Drew Neitzel may not be scoring as much for the Spartans this season, but he's still taking an overwhelming portion of their three-point attempts. In terms of percentage of one team three-pointers attempted, here's how Neitzel stacks up against other prominent gunners:Player Team Player Team Pct.

Baylor Bears (16-2)
The Texas-Oklahoma State three-overtime epic from one year and one week ago is still on my DVR, taking up three hours of valuable space that could otherwise be used for epsiodes of The Wire. It was that good. I hope that what happened between Baylor and Texas A&M on Wednesday night -- a five-overtime marathon that the Bears won, 116-110 -- was just as entertaining. Except there was no way to see any of it on TV, other than the grainy, graphic-less footage obtained for the late-night SportsCenter. It's rather nuts that even with both Baylor and A&M in the Top 25, this game wasn't anywhere on the tube, while, oodles of matchups between unranked teams -- like Georgia Tech-N.C. State, VCU-Hofstra, Kansas State-Colorado, Louisville-USF, and Missouri-Texas Tech -- were on the air ...

Drake Bulldogs (17-1)
A status check on the Korver Family (who are apparently big in German hoops message board circles):
Kyle, 26: Averaging 9.9 points for the Utah Jazz; former star at Creighton.
Klayton, 23: Averaging 9.6 points for Drake, which is killing in the Missouri Valley. He had a team-high 14 points in a win at Creighton on Jan. 22.
Kaleb, 19: Averaging 3.3 points in 11.9 minutes as a freshman for Creighton.
Kirk, 17: Averaging 9.6 points per game as a junior for Pella High in Iowa.

Pittsburgh Panthers (15-3)
Texas and Pitt are the only teams in the Power Rankings (plus fringe) that sit behind two schools they've already beaten. In the 'Horns' case, it's because they went on to lose three of five games in late December and early January, and barely beat Colorado at home last week. In the Panthers' case it's because they were soundly beaten by Dayton and lost two of their best players, point guard Levance Fields and forward Mike Cook, to injuries. The floor general is usually the most vital cog of a team, and Fields is an excellent one, but this story in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette makes the case that freshman forward DeJuan Blair is Pitt's most indispensable player. Blair's foul trouble against Cincy -- he played only 22 minutes -- was a big reason for the Panthers' debacle in the Queen City last week; he was in the same predicament during that loss to the Flyers. Said Sam Young of Blair, "It's tough to play without the big fella down there. ... It showed [against Cincy] how we played without him. We're already short-handed with him."

Stanford Cardinal (15-3)
This article in the San Francisco Chronicle points out how Cardinal center Brook Lopez is playing much better because he's no longer, well, a spaz. "Brook's just more settled down," guard Mitch Johnson told the paper. "I don't think either [Brook or his twin brother, Robin] have come close to a technical [foul]. I never felt I had to come and grab him this year." The calmer Brook scored 19 points and grabbed 16 boards in a big win over Arizona State last Saturday, making Stanford 4-2 in the Pac-10 heading into a stretch of three straight road games that should help define whether it's a legit contender for the league title.

Texas Longhorns (15-3)
I'm letting the 'Horns sneak back in this week, less because of their two-winning streak (it was against Colorado and Oklahoma State, after all) than because so many other teams lost, and it's too difficult to choose between Dayton and Xavier until they play each other Thursday night in Cincinnati. While D.J. Augustin continues to make a strong case for first-team All-America honors -- no one else even seems close at the point guard spot -- the assimilation of freshman Gary Johnson into Texas' rotation hasn't been as smooth as expected. Johnson, who was sidelined with an undisclosed heart condition before being cleared to play on Jan. 2, has averaged just 1.0 points and 11.3 minutes per game in Big 12 play, and was bumped from the starting lineup in favor of Justin Mason in Monday's win over the Cowboys. At least Mason, in his mailbag on Texas' official site, still says Johnson has the team's best nickname: "I would say the best nickname on the team would be 'G-Unit,' Gary Johnson, just because his name starts with a G and he's a unit down low and he brings that nasty to the team."

| ON THE CUSP, TIER 1: Dayton (14-2) Xavier (15-4): Consider Thursday night's duel in Cincy a play-in game for the Top 16. Arizona State (14-3): Got killed at Stanford last week. Can the young Sun Devils handle life on the road in the Pac-10? Marquette (13-4): I didn't expect the Eagles to drop to .500 in the Big East already. They're better than that. Ole Miss (15-2): Road losses in the SEC are occasionally excusable ... but not to Auburn. Butler (17-2): No longer even leading the Horizon League. The 'Dogs need to make that happen before they ascend into the rankings. ON THE CUSP, TIER 2: USC, Mississippi State, UConn, Vanderbilt, Villanova, VCU, Gonzaga, Kansas State, Missouri, Louisville, Illinois State, West Virginia, Rhode Island, Clemson, Kentucky, Florida, Cleveland State, UMass, St. Mary's.
