Rockies catcher's son, relative safe after kidnapping in Venezuela

NEW YORK (SI.com) -- The 11-year-old son of Colorado Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba is safe after being kidnapped in Venezuela.

Venezuelan police said the boy, along with Torrealba's brother-in-law, was abducted as the pair traveled to the boy's school. Wilmer Flores Trossel, director of Venezuela's federal police, said the kidnappers requested $466,000 in ransom. The ransom was not paid, Trossel said. No arrests have been made, but Flores Trossel said investigators are targeting six suspects.

Colorado Rockies president Keli McGregor said the team was thrilled with the outcomea.

"Yorvit knows that he can take the time he needs and will rejoin the club when the time is right," McGregor said in a statement.

Flores Trossel said the two were kidnapped and released on Wednesday. However the Rockies said Torrealba learned of the kidnapping on Tuesday. Torrealba left the Rockies in Houston when he learned of the abduction and flew to Venezuela.
