DETROIT (AP) -- Crews have begun tearing down Tiger Stadium.

Workers used a backhoe to knock down part of the lower deck along the former third base line of the historic Detroit ballpark on Friday as water was sprayed overhead to keep down dust.

More than a dozen fans watched from a nearby pedestrian bridge.

The park opened in 1912, and the final game was played in 1999.

Much of the park was knocked down last year. The city of Detroit decided Tuesday to level the remaining structure after rejecting a nonprofit group's $33.4 million redevelopment plan.
