Scouts from six teams check out Pedro in D.R.

Six teams went to see Cooperstown-bound right-hander Pedro Martinez perform a pitching demonstration in the Dominican, and longtime agent Fern Cuza said he hopes to have a deal done by sometime next week so he can be ready to pitch in the big leagues by around the time of next month's All-Star break.

The Rangers, Brewers and Cardinals joined the expected Pedro-watching Angels, Rays and Yankees for the workout. Teams wanted to gauge Martinez's arm action and control to see when he might be ready. The Cubs have had strong interest all along, but it's possible their uncertain ownership situation may make it difficult to sign Martinez.

The Angels, who are handicapped by injuries to key pitchers, including John Lackey and Ervin Santana, appear to be right in the mix. Lackey is pitching despite a slight elbow concern, while Santana missed his last start. The rival Rangers are also looking for pitching but have been telling teams they can't add payroll.

The Brewers are a late entry in the derby but could use a starter.

Martinez seems determined to start, according to people close to him.
