Phillies, Martinez agree to contract

ST. LOUIS -- Pedro Martinez and the Phillies have agreed to a deal on Tuesday and an announcement is expected on Wednesday, SI.com has learned.

The Phillies scouted Martinez twice recently and the right-hander passed a physical in Philadelphia on Tuesday, according to Yahoo! Sports. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that it is a one-year deal worth $1 million and includes $1.5 million in incentives.

Other teams interested in Martinez included the Diamondbacks, Indians, Pirates, Brewers, Cardinals, Cubs and Rays.

Martinez made 20 starts for the Mets last year, finishing 5-6 with a 5.62 ERA. He pitched six scoreless innings for the Dominican Republic team in the World Baseball Classic earlier this year.

The 37-year-old has played for the Dodgers, Expos, Red Sox and Mets during his fabulous career, spanning over 17 seasons. The future Hall of Famer owns a career record of 214-99 and a 2.91 ERA. Martinez has earned three Cy Young Awards and helped Boston win the 2004 World Series.
