Giants, Marlins, Yankees among teams interested in signing Penny
Brad Penny is drawing interest from the Giants, Marlins and Yankees
If Penny clears waivers on Monday he can sign with any team he chooses
Penny asked for and received his release from the Red Sox on Wednesday
Any of those three teams may sign him for the pro-rated portion of the $400,000 major-league minimum if, as expected, he clears waivers on Monday. Assuming he goes unclaimed, it will be up to Penny which team he chooses.
Penny could be claimed, but that seems less likely, as any claiming team would be responsible for a pro-rated portion of his $5-million salary.
The Yankees see Penny as a viable alternative to current No. 5 starter Sergio Mitre. Tthe Giants have been interested in a No. 5 starter and the Marlins have had starting pitching concerns in recent days. The Yankees are almost sure to make the postseason while the Giants and Marlins are among teams chasing the wild-card leading Rockies in the National League. Penny was a star on the 2003 Marlins championship team.
Penny asked for and received his release from the Red Sox, who will be responsible for the remainder of his salary.
