Rockies, Yankees consider Garland

The Rockies and Yankees are among teams that have showed interest in Diamondbacks pitcher Jon Garland as tonight's deadline approaches, but it's uncertain how likely a trade might be now.

The Rockies have appeared somewhat more interested than the Yankees, who have thus far thought the asking price was too high. Garland's contract may also be an issue.

Garland, who recently cleared waivers and can be dealt anywhere, has enhanced his value with a big August, going 3-1 with a 2.89 ERA. Overall, he is 8-11 with a 4.29 ERA. He is well known as a durable innings eater. The Rockies' rotation has been pretty good, but staff ace Aaron Cook is currently out with a shoulder injury. The Yankees have been looking for a No. 5 starter.

Garland's $7.25-million salary for 2009 is reasonable, but he has a mutual option for $10 million next year with a $2.5-million buyout if the team declines and $1 million buyout if Garland declines.
