Dodgers executive Kim Ng interviewed today for the Padres GM job, according to people familiar with the situation. Ng, who is hoping to become the first female GM in baseball, was spotted having lunch with new Padres owner Jeff Moorad.

Ng, assistant GM with the Dodgers, previously has interviewed for GM positions with the Dodgers and Mariners, jobs that went to Ned Colletti and Jack Zduriencik, respectively. It isn't immediately known what Ng's chances are. Jed Hoyer, assistant GM of the Red Sox, is considered a favorite for the job. Yankees executive Billy Eppler has been mentioned in the press as a candidate, but the Yankees said on Friday that the Padres had not requested permission to interview Eppler.

Ng was an assistant GM with the Yankees before going to the Dodgers, and before that she worked as an executive in the Chicago White Sox front office.

Moorad said in a phone interview a couple weeks ago that he hoped to have a GM in place within a few weeks and that he wouldn't be considering any in-house candidates or any candidates from the Diamondbacks, his previous team. There appears to be a gentlemen's agreement for him not to poach anyone from Arizona.

Moorad let go longtime Padres GM Kevin Towers, who'd been the GM there since 1995.
