Mariners reach deal for Bradley

The Mariners and Cubs reached agreement on a deal that would send outfielder Milton Bradley to Seattle in exchange for pitcher Carlos Silva and $6 million, SI.com has learned.

The money, which will be paid out over two years, is to offset the difference in salaries (Bradley is owed $21 million over the next two years and Silva is due $25 million over the same period) and to make up for Silva's poor performance.

Silva was 1-3 with an 8.60 ERA with the Mariners after going 4-15 with a 6.46 ERA his first year there. He signed a four-year, $48-million contract following four solid seasons with the Twins. Perhaps the Cubs feel he can regain his form.

Bradley had a disappointing offensive year in Chicago, hitting .257 with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs, after getting off to a poor start and never really recovering from it. Bradley is considered an above average defensive outfielder and would fit into Seattle's plans to build around pitching and defense. But with Bradley the issue is always whether he will fit in the clubhouse and the city.

SI.com first reported trade talks between the Mariners and Cubs were back on. Larry Stone of the Seattle Times was the first to say a deal was near.
