University of Maine associate coach resigns amid sex allegations
University of Maine associate coach Mike Burden resigned Monday
Police say he was charged with unlawful sexual conduct
ORONO, Maine (AP) -- The associate men's basketball coach at Maine has resigned after being charged with making sexual advances on a member of the women's soccer team.
Mike Burden resigned Monday after being placed on paid administrative leave a day earlier by Athletic Director Blake James. University spokesman Joe Carr says James had no further comment because of personnel and legal issues involved.
Police Capt. Josh Ewing says Burden was charged with unlawful sexual contact against a 21-year-old woman and assault against a second woman who stopped to help her early Sunday.
Ewing says that before the incident Burden was the passenger in a car whose operator was arrested for drunken driving in Orono. He says Burden was walking home when the encounter occurred. A home phone number for Burden couldn't be found.
