Former New York Jets and Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre is staying retired, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress, who had met with and courted Favre during the summer, told the Star Tribune that Favre informed him of the decision.

"I just think it was a rare opportunity to explore a Hall of Fame quarterback who had background in the NFC and in this division," Childress told the paper. "He knows our system inside out ... This doesn't change anything about how I feel about our football team."

Favre, who stepped away from the Jets after one season in New York, had told the Vikings that he would announce his choice before players officially report to training camp on Thursday. The Hall of Fame-bound quarterback said his body was not up to the grind of the NFL season.
