Langenbrunner, Crosby, Green are Stars of Week |
NEW YORK (AP) -- New Jersey Devils right wing Jamie Langenbrunner, Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby and Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green have been named the NHL's Three Stars for the week ending Feb. 1. FIRST STAR -- Jamie Langenbrunner, RW, Devils Langenbrunner led the league in goals with six, including three game-winners and added an assist as New Jersey won three games, giving them a record of 32-15-3 good for 67 points and first place in the Atlantic Division. He began the week with two goals in a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Jan. 27 and scored twice, including the overtime winner, with an assist in a 4-3 win over the Boston Bruins on Jan. 29. He closed the week with two goals, including the overtime winner, as the Devils defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 on Jan. 30. Appearing in 49 games this season, Langenbrunner sits fourth on the Devils with 41 points (14-27--41) and is third with a +19 plus-minus rating. SECOND STAR -- Sidney Crosby, C, Penguins Crosby led all scorers for the week with eight points (3-5--8) in three games, bringing his season total to 68 (20-48--68) in 50 games, second in the NHL behind teammate Evgeni Malkin (21-54--75). He began the week with a goal and three assists in a 6-2 victory over the New York Rangers pn Jan. 28. On Jan. 30, he had a goal and an assist in a 4-3 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils and finished the week with a goal and assist in a 5-4 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Jan. 31. THIRD STAR -- Mike Green, D, Capitals Green tied for second in the NHL in points for the week with seven (3-4--7) as the Capitals gained five of a possible six points, improving their record to 32-15-4, good for 68 points and first in the Southeast Division. He began the week with a goal in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Boston Bruins on Jan. 27. On Jan. 31, he had a goal and an assist in a 4-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings and closed the week by with a goal and three assists in a 7-4 win over the Ottawa Senators on Feb. 1. For the season, Green has appeared in 38 games and is tied for the league lead among defensemen with 40 points (15-25--40). Devils Langenbrunner tied for third among scorers with 17 points (nine goals, eight assists) in 14 games as the Devils went 11-3-0 for the month to improve their overall record to 32-15-3, 67 points and first in the Atlantic Division. He recorded points in 10 of 14 games including goals in six games, and had six multiple point games and game-winning goals against Ottawa on Jan. 27, Boston on Jan. 29 and Pittsburgh on Jan. 30. Appearing in 49 games this season, Langenbrunner has 41 points (14-27--41) with a +19 plus-minus rating. SECOND STAR -- Scott Nidermayer, D, Ducks Niedermayer led all defensemen with 17 points (one goal, 16 assists) in 14 games as the Ducks record moved to 25-22-5. He had five multiple point games including two-point efforts against Phoenix on Jan. 4 and Jan. 27, Los Angeles on Jan. 6 and Chicago on Jan. 28 as well as a three-point game against Colorado on Jan. 31. Niedermayer has appeared in all 52 games for the Ducks this season and is tied for fifth among NHL defensemen with 36 points (6-30--36). THIRD STAR -- Ryan Miller, G, Sabres Miller led all NHL goaltenders in victories, with a 9-3-0 record with 2.30 goals-against average, .932 save percentage and one shutout as the Sabres improved to 26-19-5 overall, good for 57 points and seventh in the Eastern Conference. Miller started 12 of the Sabres' 13 games in January and allowed two goals or fewer eight times, including a 28-save, 2-0 win over Phoenix to finish the month. He faced 40-plus shots on back-to-back nights, turning aside 43 in a 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Jan. 9 and 45 in a 3-1 loss to Detroit on Jan. 10. Overall, Miller has a record of 24-13-4, with a 2.53 GAA, .917 save pct. and four shutouts.
