Quick, Hossa and Green named Stars of the Week |
NEW YORK (AP) -- Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick, Detroit Red Wings right wing Marian Hossa and Washington Capitals defenseman Mike Green have been named the NHL's Three Stars for the week ending Feb. 8. FIRST STAR -- Jonathan Quick, G, Kings SECOND STAR -- Marian Hossa, RW. Red Wings Hossa shared the NHL scoring lead last week with seven points (six goals, one assist), helping the Red Wings (35-11-7, 77 points) to four consecutive victories and moving them within two points of the first-place San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference standings. He scored a pair of goals in a 4-3 shootout victory over the St. Louis Blues on Feb. 2, tallied two more in a 5-4 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Feb. 4 and had the game-winning goal and an assist in an 8-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Feb. 7. Hossa closed the week by reaching the 30-goal mark for the seventh time in the past eight seasons, scoring a key third-period insurance score in a 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Feb. 8. THIRD STAR -- Mike Green, D, Capitals Green earned Third Star honors for the second consecutive week after being credited with seven points (four goals, three assists) and becoming the first NHL defenseman in nearly 25 years to score a goal in six consecutive games. He scored one and was credited with an assist in a 5-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Feb. 3, had another goal-assist effort in a 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Feb. 5 and concluded the week with two goals and an assist in a 3-1 win over the Florida Panthers on Feb. 7. Green's current six-game goal-scoring streak is the longest by an NHL defenseman since Ray Bourque's for Boston in March 1984 and one shy of the league record for blueliners set by the Bruins' Mike O'Connell in January, 1984. Green's 19 goals and 47 points lead all defensemen this season.
