MOSCOW (AP) -- Billionaire businessman Alexander Lebedev is joining the increasingly crowded mayoral race in Sochi, the Russian city that will host the 2014 Winter Olympics.
Lebedev is a banker and airline investor who recently added London's Evening Standard to his newspaper holdings. Spokesman Artyom Artyomov says Lebedev will submit his candidacy papers Tuesday.
Billions of dollars are beginning to pour into Sochi as Russia builds infrastructure and Olympic venues for the Black Sea port. The mayor will play a large role in directing where funds are spent.
Former Deputy Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov is also running. Andrei Lugovoi says he may run. He is accused by Britain of killing ex-KGB officer Alexander Litvinenko.
