KNOXVILLE, Iowa (AP) -- A 34-year-old Kansas driver died on Saturday after injuring his head and neck during a crash in a race at Knoxville Raceway.

Chad McDaniel of Concordia, Kan., struck another car during a Midget Nationals race on Friday night, United States Auto Club officials said.

He was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines at 12:37 a.m. Saturday, hospital spokesman Gregg Lagan said.

McDaniel had scored five top-10 finishes in six races this season.

"Our sport has lost a passionate racer today, and our sincere and heartfelt condolences go out to his family during these most difficult times," said USAC Racing official Kevin Miller.

McDaniel's mother said she was touched by the expressions of sympathy and support.

"I'm just shocked," Dianna McDaniel told The Des Moines Register. "He just had so much going for him."

McDaniel is survived by his wife, Trisha, and two children, Trevor and Taylor, USAC officials said.
