Back from ban, McGeady paces Celtic |
GLAGOW, Scotland (AP) -- Celtic winger Aiden McGeady returned from his club ban to clinch a 2-1 victory over Dundee in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup on Saturday. The 22-year-old Ireland international reminded Gordon Strachan what Celtic had been missing while serving a two-week suspension resulting from a dressing room row with the manager. A blunder by Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc had allowed Colin McMenamin to put Dundee of the First Division into a shock 14th-minute lead. The Scottish Premier League champions took until the 37th to draw level and Scott Brown was involved in the buildup and the finish. The Scotland midfielder drove down the left and into the Dundee box before pulling the ball back to Scott McDonald. The Australia striker's mishit his shot, but the ball ricocheted off several Dundee defenders to land in front of Brown to score from close range. Celtic's progress in the competition was secured a minute before the break when McGeady, who signed a five-year contract in July, curled a superb shot into the top corner past Rab Douglas. In the last minute of the match, Boruc almost compounded another flawed performance when he dropped a cross from McMenamin a meter from goal in the last minute, but Glenn Loovens came to his rescue this time by clearing the danger. Sone Aluko's 57th-minute goal gave Aberdeen a 2-1 victory at Alloa, which canceled out Lee Miller's early goal when Andy Scott netted from the penalty spot just before the break. Second Division outfit Ayr United forced a replay against topflight Kilmarnock by earning a 2-2 draw in stoppage time. Kilmarnock's players thought they were through when Craig Bryson found the back of the net in the 54th after Dean Keenan had canceled out Manuel Pascali's opener. Allan Russell then failed to kill off the tie from the penalty spot with 20 minutes to go, before substitute Alex Williams grabbed the last-gasp equalizer. Inverness, the SPL's bottom side, found some form in the cup with Felipe Morais scoring a double on his debut and Iain Vigurs adding another in a 3-0 victory over Partick Thistle.
