Donovan scores in second Bayern appearance |
Well, that didn't take long. In just his second game for Bundesliga leader Bayern Munich, Landon Donovan scored his first goal. The Bavarians ran out 3-1 winners over Al-Wehda in a match in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Bayern is training in the Middle East during the league's winter break. The Germans, who beat Al-Jezeera Sports Club 3-2 in a friendly on Saturday, took the initiative in front of 12,000 fans. Frank Ribéry struck first in the 31st minute, turning in the box and firing home in the lower corner. Four minutes later, Tim Borowski slammed home to double the visitors' lead. In the second half, things were more even. Al-Kuwaikabi got Al-Wehda back into the game with a lovely individual effort in the 53rd minute. He slalomed through four defenders into the Bayern area and calmly finished with a deft tap past the on-rushing keeper. Donovan, who joined Bayern on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy this winter, then iced the match in the 91st minute. The U.S. international controlled a high ball at the top of the box, held off the defender, spun and fired. His low shot curled beautifully into the lower left corner past the sprawling keeper's hands. "That was a nice goal," Bayern coach Jürgen Klinsmann said after the game. "It will give him a boost." -- Goal.com ![]() | ![]()
