France: PSG beats Lorient 1-0 |
PARIS (AP) -Goalkeeper Mickael Landreau stopped a late penalty to help Paris Saint-Germain beat Lorient 1-0 and cut Lyon's lead to one point in the French league as the defending champion lost 2-0 to Lille on Saturday. Landreau turned back Rafik Saifi's effort from the spot in the 80th minute after Mali defender Sammy Traore handled the ball. Ludovic Giuly had scored for PSG in the 22nd with a volley, after Brazilian fullback Ceara's free kick was diverted by Guillaume Hoarau. PSG has won six of its last seven league matches to consolidate second place. "I'm satisfied with the selflessness, bravery and energy provided to obtain that result,'' PSG coach Paul Le Guen said. Saifi climbed into the stands after the match to talk with a fan who insulted him. Lyon leads with 53 points, followed by PSG on 52, Marseille and Toulouse with 49 each, Bordeaux on 47 and Lille 46. At Stade de France, Slovakia forward Robert Vittek outjumped the Lyon defense to head in a cross from Michel Bastos in the 60th before Bastos beat goalkeeper Remy Vercoutre in the 89th. Lyon striker Karim Benzema, who was still struggling with a hip injury, was replaced at halftime by Honorato Ederson. Toulouse beat Bordeaux 3-0 to move into fourth and stretch its unbeaten run to 15 games in all competitions. "Beating a title contender by three goals is really a great satisfaction,'' Toulouse coach Alain Casanova said. "We perfectly executed our game plan. In that regard, it's arguably our best match this season.'' Also Saturday, it was: Marseille 0, Valenciennes 0; Nice 0, Monaco 0; Nancy 2, Le Mans 2; and Grenoble 2, Caen 1. Valenciennes had the best scoring chance in Marseille with a long-range free kick from Jonathan Lacourt that struck the crossbar in the 87th. Marseille remained third but lost ground in the title race. Valenciennes extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games to jump to 15th place. In Toulouse, Francois Sirieix unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the box in the 32nd to put the host team ahead. Andre-Pierre Gignac doubled the lead in the 45th to notch his 16th goal this season and consolidate his spot as the top scorer in the league. Moussa Sissoko sealed the win in stoppage time, chipping the ball over Bordeaux goalkeeper Ulrich Rame. Bordeaux forward Fernando Cavenaghi limped off the pitch in the 74th after hurting his knee in a collision with Mohamed Fofana, and could not be replaced as coach Laurent Blanc had already made three substitutions. The result dented Bordeaux's title hopes, as the club slipped to fifth place with 47 points. "We faced a team that was stronger than us, it's as simple as that,'' Blanc said. "We showed our limits at this moment.'' Monaco defender Cedric Mongongu was sent off in Nice after picking up a second yellow card in the 77th. Morocco midfielder Youssouf Hadji opened the scoring for Nancy with an angled shot, slipping the ball through goalkeeper Yohann Pele's legs after two minutes. But Mathieu Coutadeur leveled for Le Mans in the 26th with an assist from Norway forward Thorstein Helstad. Nancy defender Andre Luiz made it 2-1 with a volley from close range in the 53rd, before Helstad collected a long pass from Sebastien Corchia in the 62nd to shoot past goalkeeper Gennaro Bracigliano and salvage a draw for Le Mans. Le Mans defender Samuel Bouhours was dismissed in the 88th for a violent tackle on Moncef Zerka. Guinea forward Larsen Toure headed in a corner from Laurent Batlles in the fourth minute of injury time to give Grenoble a 2-1 victory over Caen. Caen was down to 10 men after 10 minutes as Gregory Leca was red-carded for fouling Pierre Boya who was going clear on goal. Sandy Paillot found the net for Grenoble in the 30th after a low cross from Laurent Courtois. But Caen rallied with a diagonal shot from Anthony Deroin in the 85th. On Sunday, Rennes hosts Auxerre, Saint-Etienne plays Nantes and Le Havre faces Sochaux. Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
