Mexico: Ciudad Juarez stuns ex-champ Toluca |
MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Ciudad Juarez complete a huge upset win over reigning champion Toluca and Pachuca defeated Jaguares on Sunday to qualify for the Mexican first division semifinal playoffs. The Indians got a 0-0 draw in the return leg against Toluca to advance on a 1-0 aggregate and will play on Thursday and Sunday against Pachuca, the best team of the regular season. Pachuca had a 5-1 aggregate win over Jaguares, with Argentine midfielder Christian Gimenez scoring a goal and creating another in Sunday's 2-0 win. Pumas, which eliminated Tecos on Saturday, will play on Wednesday and Saturday against surprising Puebla, which advanced over Monterrey after struggling until the end of the season to stay in Mexico's top flight. Ciudad Juarez, a team with one of Mexico's smallest payrolls, neutralized a Toluca attack that had the second-best record in the tournament with 34 goals in 17 matches. Founded in 2005, Ciudad Juarez reached the semifinals for the first time. Toluca was trying to win back-to-back championships to tie America, which is second on the all-time list with 10 championship titles. Chivas leads with 11 titles. On Saturday, Pumas defeated Tecos 3-0 for a 3-2 win on aggregate while Puebla drew with Monterrey 2-2 and progressed 5-3 from the two-game series. Copyright 2009 Associated Press.
