GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) -- Schalke midfielder Jermaine Jones' return from a hairline fracture of his left shin has been delayed by at least three weeks.

Jones has been bothered by a metal plate in his leg. According to the Bundesliga club, the player will not undergo further surgery to remove the plate.

The 27-year-old midfielder will spend the next three weeks working with the club's chief physiotherapist in an attempt to fix the problem.

Jones, whose father is American, has made himself available for the United States team after giving up hopes of playing for Germany.
