Argentina: San Lorenzo rallies past River Plate

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- Leandro Romagnoli and Bernardo Romeo scored in the last ten minutes to give San Lorenzo a 2-1 home win over River Plate in round seven of Argentinas Apertura tournament Sunday.

River coach Nestor Gorosito resigned after the loss, which capped a dreadful start to the season including one win from seven games and a first round exit from the Copa Sudamericana.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Boca Juniors got a 3-2 home victory over Velez Sarsfield, Gimnasia La Plata won 2-0 at home against Chacarita Juniors and Lanus beat Godoy Cruz 1-0.

Copa Libertadores champion Estudiantes still holds top spot in the standings after seven games, despite a 1-0 loss at Argentinos Juniors on Saturday. The win moved Argentinos into second position, with Banfield third and Velez down to fourth.

San Lorenzo its match brightly against River in the Nuevo Gasometro stadium, with Juan Monsequez forcing Nicolas Navarro to make a fingertip save from a rasping drive in the 17th minute.

Gustavo Bou led a River counterattack in the 23rd minute, twisting free in the box before seeing his shot diverted wide.

River took the lead on the 30-minute mark when Diego Buonanotte buried a penalty after San Lorenzo goalkeeper Pablo Migliore appeared to trip Daniel Villalba.

Reports in the Argentine press had suggested Gorosito would resign as River Plate coach regardless of Sundays result, but the beleagured coach looked leaving with a victory until a disastrous finale.

River defender Gustavo Cabral punched Jonathan Bottinelli, gifting a penalty to San Lorenzo and earning himself a red card.

Leandro Romagnoli stroked home the 83rd minute penalty and three minutes later, Romagnolis cross from the right was headed in by Romeo for the winner.

Martin Palermo scored a 73rd minute winner as Boca Juniors twice came from behind to beat defending champion Velez Sarsfield.

Leandro Caruso had put Velez in front with goals in the 6th and 46th minutes, but Sebastian Battaglia drew Boca level for the first time in the 35th minute and Juan Roman Riquelme got a second equalizer in the 64th.

Earlier in the day, Juan Cuevas and Lucas Landa helped Gimnasia La Plata to the win over Chacarita Juniors.

Sundays final match saw Santiago Hoyos seal a win for Lanus over Godoy Cruz with a goal just before half time.

In Friday and Saturday results it was: Colon de Santa Fe 0, Banfield 0; Independiente 2, Tigre 1; Huracan 3, Racing Club 1; Argentinos Juniors 1, Estudiantes 0; Arsenal de Sarandi 1, Rosario Central 0; Newells Old Boys 3, Atletico Tucuman 0.
