Pumas and Chivas get key wins in Apertura

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Pumas and Chivas got key wins over Jaguares and Monterrey respectively, while America and Cruz Azul suffered painful setbacks against Pachuca and Tigres in the 10th round of the Mexican Apertura.

In Chiapas, Pablo Barrera scored two goals in a three-minute span as the Pumas defeated Jaguares 2-0 to for just their second win of the season.

The reining champions ended a four game winless streak and got their first victory since August 30, while sending Jaguares to their fourth home loss of the season.

In Guadalajara, Javier Hernandez scored a goal in the 70th as Chivas got their second win under new manager Raul Arias by taking care of Monterrey 1-0.

Arias, who signed with the team three weeks ago, is a defensive manager who now has two 1-0 wins a 0-0 draw for Chivas, who have 12 points.

In Pachuca, Argentine midfielder Christian Gimenez, who used to play for America, scored of a free kick in the 23rd minute and Juan Carlos Cacho added a goal in the 85th as los Tuzos gave America its first loss in their last nine matches with a 2-1 victory.

In Monterrey, Argentine Gaston Fernandez and Brazilian striker Itamar Batista scored goals as the Tigres, playing with 10 men since the first half, got a 2-0 win over Cruz Azul.

Tigres, winless in their last six matches, sent the Blue Machine to a second straight loss.

In other matches, it was: Atlante 2, Morelia 1; Queretaro 3, Ciudad Juarez 1; Toluca 1, San Luis, 1; Santos 3; Puebla 3.
