Mexico: Quintero, surging Santos beat Chivas |
Santos Laguna beat Chivas Guadalajara on Monday 1-0 with a goal from Darwin Quintero. The win propelled Santos to first place in Group 3 and left Chivas in third place. Santos' first chance came in the 18th minute, when Jorge Ivan Estrada took a shot from outside the area, but sent it wide of Luis Michel's goal. In the 41st minute Darwin Quintero crossed to Matias Vuoso, who then tried a scissor-kick, but sent the ball wide of Luis Michel's goal. A few seconds later, in the 42nd minute, Walter Jimenez crossed from the right for Darwin Quintero. The ball hit Edgar "Chore" Mejia and rebounded on to the path of Quintero who took the advantage to score and put Santos up 1-0. Chivas had an opportunity in the 51st minute when Johnny Magallon received a cross on the right and sent a powerful ball in to Oswaldo Sanchez's goal. The shot ended up going just wide. Aaron Galindo was sent off in the 57th minute for his second yellow card for a studs-up tackle on Quintero. Santos came close to doubling its lead in the 63rd minute as Quintero slipped through the Chivas defense and came up on the right side of the goal against Michel. Quintero tried a powerful shot, but his effort went over the goal. Copyright 2009 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
