RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- Universidad de Chile came from two goals behind to claim a 2-2 draw against Brazil's Fluminense in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana quarterfinals on Thursday.

Striker Fred scored twice to give Fluminense a commanding lead, but Walter Montillo and Juan Manuel Olivera pulled Universidad level in front of a meager crowd of just over 1,000 in Maracana.

In the other first legs earlier this week, Velez Sarsfield and Liga de Quito drew 1-1, Cerro Porteno beat Botafogo 2-1, and San Lorenzo won 1-0 at River Plate of Uruguay.

The return legs will be played in two weeks.

Fluminense striker Fred scored in the 16th minute with a shot that deflected off Universidad defender Mauricio Victorino, and scored again barely 30 seconds after the break.

Montillo halved the deficit in the 52nd, finishing off a pass from Manuel Iturra.

The Chilean side completed the comeback with an equalizer from Olivera in the 57th following a cross from substitute Manuel Villalobos.
